Who killed Jesus? "Christ was betrayed by one of his disciples, who delivered him to the Jewish religious leaders for trial. This trial was conducted illegally, where false witnesses were brought to testify against Jesus, until finally one of the priests adjured him by God to tell them whether he was the Christ, the Son of the Living God. When he answered in the affirmative, they charged him of being guilty of death, and brought him to Pontius Pilate. Pilate wanted nothing to do with it. According to Scripture, he said: "Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death." -- John 18:31 After speaking with Jesus, Pilate found no fault in him and wanted to release him. However, the religious Jewish leaders incited the crowd to cry out for his crucifixion: "When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify [him], crucify [him]. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify [him]: for I find no fault in him. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God." -- John 19:6-7 Pilate was adamant about having Jesus released though: "And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesars friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar." -- John 19:12 In the end Pilate gave in and handed Jesus over to be crucified. It's clear that had it not been for the Jewish mob, Pilate would have released Christ. Though Rome crucified him since only they had the legal power to do so, the Jewish authorities and the Jewish mob were clearly responsible for his death.
