The Kingdom of Guardia at 1000 AD: The Millennial Fair has just begun! People are celebrating over their victory over the war against the Mystics many years ago. Little do they know they only have 999 years to celebrate... Chrono, a young man growing up in Guardia, visits the fair. Amidst the excitement, he runs into the young girl Marle, who decides to follow him. They visit Lucca, Chrono's old friend. Lucca, a brilliant inventor, created the first human teleporter for the fair, but when Marle tries it, something goes wrong. A time portal opens and swallows up Marle. Chrono bravely leaps into the gate along with Marle to save her. He is surprised when he visits Guardia, and it is 600 AD, during the war with the Mystics. He finds Marle in the castle of Guardia, where everyone thinks she is the the Queen Leene, who has been kidnapped by Magus' forces. When Lucca arrives, she reveals that Marle is none other that the Princess Nadia from Guardia. However, Marle then disappears. Because she was found, history was changed. The search for Queen Leene was halted because Guardia thought Marle was Leene. Because Marle is the decedent of Leene, she would not exist if Leene wasn't found. Chrono and Marle, along with a knight name Gleen, rescue Leene and restore Marle. But when they return to Guardia, they are seized by Guardia's troops. Chrono is charged with kidnapping Marle and is sentenced with execution, despite Marle's efforts to prevent it. However, Chrono escapes and along with Lucca and Marle, they escape through a protal in the Guardia Forest. This brings the party to 2300 AD, where the world lies in ruins. They soon discover that this is because of the Day of Lavos, 1999. Lavos, in prehistoric language Big Fire, a demon, and destroyer of the world. Summoned by Magus, he kills all people in the world what were not in domes. The aftermath was no hope for humanity. Mutants roamed the labs and robots ruled uninhabited domes. People starved due to lack of vegetation. After viewing this apocalypse on video, Marle is determined to prevent it. Though Chrono may face many troubles, and even death, he must destroy Lavos, because Chrono is humanity's last hope. And thus, Chrono, Marle, Lucca and many others including Gleen, Ayla, and Robo embark on a quest to save humanity's future. As for the brave Knigh Gleen an unknowed andventure awaken the power of the gods. The future will soon be saved.
