Granthaalok (meaning The Light of Books in most Indian languages) is a freeware (first introduced in Feb 2006) developed by Rituraj Kalita of Guwahati (India). It should be ideal for managing the book-lending and returning information of a small book-library, such as your personal (books & discs) collection, a neighborhood library or the mini-library in an academic department. It is kept very simple, as it is made to revolve around only the few basic processes of entry of new books, admission of new members, book-list viewing, member-list viewing, book-lending, book-returning, book-search, book-disposal and member-farewell, as is seen in its central working screen displayed below. The command buttons for these basic processes are kept bi-lingual, using both English & Assamese translations describing the processes. (In Granthaalok you may, surely, use the term book in a more general sense to include books, notes, manuscripts, CDs, DVDs etc.)
To protect your Granthaalok data from (computer) disk failure, one should backup the BACKUP subfolder (within the working folder C:\Grantha) into a CD/DVD, USB storage (pen) drive or a web-folder, preferably once everyday. In case of a hard-disk failure, Granthaalok has to be re-installed first, then the stored contents (files) of the BACKUP subfolder has to be copied into the working folder C:\Grantha within the repaired (or new) hard disk.
The basic authorization password is Guwahati, which comes from the name of the Indian city where Granthaalok was developed. This password must be changed immediately after the first log-on, so as to protect the security of the records in your library. The unchangeable advanced-editing password is CottChem, which should be used only by the advanced operators proficient in computer-operations and familiar with the FoxPro family of software packages. This advanced password signifies that Granthaalok was first developed for the departmental library at the Department of Chemistry, Cotton College, Guwahati (where the developer works).
