1st Half
The 1st game of the season to be played at Bell End, saw 3 new players come into the team, the return of the prodigal goal scorer Steven Flagratty, another familiar face returned to the Hammers side Stuart Patman , and the ever charismatic Mark Peacock in his first ever game for the Hammers. Therefore the starting 11 consisted of Peacock in goal, Kai, Trudge, Kirk and Fardell at the back. In midfield Ibbott, Mark Russell Jnr, Stuart and Luke Kelly starting his 2nd game at left wing!! With Steve and Mickey upfront. Well once again a strong start in the match by the boys, after Steven, 5 minutes into his return for the club capitalised on the opposition keepers mistake and calmly finished to give a 1- 0 lead. Everything seemed to be going smoothly with Mark and Stuart commanding the centre midfield well. Then all of a sudden a ball split the Hammers defence and a clean lobbed strike beat Peacock to make it level for Clearglaze, this brought a ten minute period in where by The Hammers conceded three more goals going into halftime undeservedly 4-1 down.

2nd Half
After a stern team talk and everyone sharing their views on how the 1st half went the team went out completely rejuvenated and started to look like a team possessed, half time changes bought Kai off for Baxter, with Ibbott dropping to right back and Mickey going onto the right wing. After some neat play and a clever flick on by Baxter, Steve bravely jumped up to Nod in the 2nd for Hammers. The pressure continued and a lovely floated cross by Mickey 5 minutes later brought a RASPING volley from Luke into the right hand corner of the goal, 3 – 4, the comeback had begun…. Or so the boys thought. Lots of possession however could not lead to another breakdown of the Clearglaze defence, with 5 minutes remaining and the Hammers on all out attack lead to a ball knocked over by the Clearglaze centre midfielder with only Kirk at the back the striker got the better of him to knock his fourth goal of the game past Peacock. Although many of the boys claim this goal to be offside  The final whistle soon followed with another unfortunate defeat!! But bring on EAGLES in the next one boys.

Kempston Hammers 3-5 Clearglaze

Sunday 3rd September 2006

Opponent: Brickhill Warriors
Venue: Biddenham Upper School
Referee: Brian Muggeridge
Weather: Sunny, Strong Winds
Result: Brickhill Warriors 4 – 3 Kempston Hammers

1st Half
The first game on the season got underway with a somewhat re-jigged first eleven. Our resident left back Luke Kelly was pushed onto the left wing with Simon Fardell making his debut for the club dropping in at left back. The back four consisted of Fardell, Liam Parker, Kai Wooding and Mark Russell Snr, in the midfield was Tom Ibbott, Mark Russell Jnr, Aust Trudgill, Luke Kelly, and starting upfront was Ben Watkins and Martin Baxter. With some solid passing within the first 30 minutes the team retained possession well making Brickhill do all the running. The first goal came after about 10 minutes with Ben and Ibbott linking up well, Ben eventually put Ibbott through on goal who finished cleanly. The next goal came with about 10 minutes of the second half remaining, Luke Kelly in his first game for Hammers on the left wing was terrorising the oppositions right back and eventually the ball broke though on the left hand side for Baxter and he smashed the ball into the back of the net. Unfortunately for Baxter however this would be his last contribution to the match as a flaying arm would knock his already damaged teeth almost clean out, unable to continue Baxter was substituted for Nat Trudgill replacing him upfront. Once a two nil lead had been established the boys got somewhat complacent clearly thinking that it was going to be a goal drought, this complacency lead for some neat passing moves down the right side for Brickhill and their number 8 striker getting to the ball before Hulian and nicking the ball round him to put it into the net.

2nd Half
The 2nd half started with the boys not fully switched on and a number of them suffering from what appeared to be the result of a night on the booze. This took its toll and only minutes into the 2nd half Brickhill had equalised. This could still not stir the lads from their slumber and constant poor passing and losing possession too easily, giving Brickhill a lot of confidence and they went onto take the lead in the match for the first time. Fardell who was having an extremely good game had to come off with trouble with his thigh. A change was forced to be made and Brad Kenyon came on upfront with Nat trudge dropping to left mid and Luke Kelly dropping to left back. This change of formation however caused more problems for Hammers as the shape was totally lost. The fourth Brickhill goal came from a corner with Hulian punching out and unfortunately it dropped to their striker who struck first time into the back of the net, time passed with nothing eventful happening until a corner from Ben Watkins was perfectly placed for the Crouchy look-alike Brad to head into the back of the net. Although pressure built, Hammers could not get the equalising goal and the game finished 4-3.

Opponent: Wootton Blue Cross Reserves (Pre Season Friendly)
Venue: Wootton Blue Cross
Referee: Ken Moleneux
Weather: Mild, Overcast, Slight Drizzle
Result: Wootton Blue Cross 4 – 0 Kempston Hammers

1st Half
This was the first full 90 minutes the hammers had played and after training all summer thankfully the fitness of the boys hadn’t diminished totally. Kick off was 15 minutes late so the game got underway at 19:45pm in the floodlight Blue Cross Stadium. The starting formation was 4-4-2 and a major factor in this game was that it was experimental so we started with a midfield pair of Trudge and Holey. As always Mr Hulian started in goal, and the back four was comprised of Luke, Kirk, Kai and Mark Russell Snr, on the wings were Trudge Jnr and Tom Ibbott. Finally upfront started Ben and Mickey, on the bench were Baxter, Brad, Muzza and Mark Russell Jnr.

The game started well with us boys knocking the ball around well and really battling in midfield. However the game opened up more about 15 mins in as Blue Cross’s pre season preparation (which was a lot more than ours) began to show. Penetrating the defence in quick succession Hulian was forced to pull off a couple of smart saves, this then woke the defence up and they started to have some solidarity, with Kirk especially coming to life cleaning up a lot of balls coming through from the Blue Cross midfield, and making some important interceptions. However our defence was breached late on again in the first half and Wootton’s striker was clean through on goal and calmly slotted it past Hulian. At this time you could see the boys were starting to tire as the ball was continuously punted up the field giving their keeper enough time to calmly collect the ball.

2nd Half
At this point the starting 11 had been changed around so much I cannot remember who was present on the field. However right from the off the lads found themselves rejuvenated from the half time break and started the half positively knocking the ball around really well. Wootton soon found their feet again, striking a shot which Hulian brilliantly parried onto the bar. A break down the wing and a neat finish lead to Blue Crosses 2nd of the match with Mark Umney outside of the boot strike into the top left corner. The Hammers did not let their heads drop though as they battled for everything they could. Fitness was key by this point and Blue Crosses prior games were starting to show, as the boys started to drop from the pace a little, a fortunate handball was the result of the 3rd goal with the referee not seeing the incident. And finally late on in the game I hate to mention it Chris, but a free kick curled from the right edge of the box lobbed the Hulian and into the top corner.

In all it was a Solid Performance for the boys, it was tough but we can build on this and look forward to a successful season.
