Class of ‘05: Though Mike Garvey is long removed from his years of schooling, he will join the Class of 2005, November 6. How so? He will be inducted into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame. Despite competing in only his first year of Nextel Cup competition, Garvey has a long history of racing on his resume.
Before joining Peak Performance Motorsports, Garvey racked up 22 career wins in the defunct ASA. He is tied with Mark Martin for fifth on the career wins list. He has raced in a variety of circuits over the years including the NASCAR Busch Series and USAR Hooters Pro Cup. Garvey’s career in motorsports began shortly after he graduated high school in 1980. His induction merits from his success in the Super Late Model ranks. The Muskegon, Mich. native now lives in McDonough, Ga.
“It’s really neat; that’s something you don’t think about. It’s great to get this type of recognition, because it means that my peers back in Michigan have kept up with my racing and have obviously been impressed with my accomplishments. That said, it’s just a huge honor. The really cool thing for me is that it’s really meant a lot to my mom and dad [Mike and Jude Garvey]. I grew up watching my dad race on dirt and with the Late Models. It’s exciting for both of them.”
On the Short Track: Garvey is especially excited to head to Loudon this weekend for a classic short track race. He is a two-time winner of the All-American 400 at the Nashville Fairgrounds, which is recognized as one of the nation’s premier short track events.
“I’m definitely looking forward to taking the Jani-King Ford to Loudon. I love racing this type of track. I’ve raced at the Milwaukee Mille, and based on what I’ve seen, it’s got a lot of similarities. I’ve had some great runs at Milwaukee, won a couple times in fact. Even though I’ve never raced at NHIS, I still think I’ll be able to jump in the car and benefit the team right away because of my knowledge of short track racing. It’s apparent that we struggle on tracks where I’ve never raced, but this weekend is different since I have some experience on this style of track.”
Down But Not Out: They last two weeks have been very frustrating for Garvey and the Peak Performance Motorsports team. The No. 66 was fast at Daytona, and posted a solid time during qualifying – one that would have put it well into the field under last year’s rules. However, since a number of teams were slower than Garvey, yet locked into the field because of their ranking in the top-35 of the owner points, Garvey and the team were forced to head home early. At Chiagoland, he had a good-handling car, but just wasn’t fast enough for the show. To date, Garvey has raced twice for PPM, with the team’s best performance of the year coming in his debut at Pocono where he finished 25th.
