Databases
AskERIC is a database of information that focuses largely on the area of education and is a product of the US Department of Education.

Funding Sources-Private Foundations
Pew Charitable Trusts supports nonprofit activities in the areas of culture, education, the environment, health and human services, public policy and religion.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York has a policy of selecting a few areas at a time in which to concentrate its grants. Currently it has four major program areas: Education; International Peace & Security; International Development; and Democracy.

The Andrew Mellon Foundation supports religious, charitable, scientific, literary and educational programs. Currently the Foundation makes grants on a selective basis to institutions of higher education in cultural affairs and the performing arts, in population, in conservation and the environment, and in public affairs.

The Center for Field Research provides grants for basic research related to preserving the environment - it is the research agency of the Earthwatch Institute.

The David and Lucille Packard Foundation is a private family foundation that focuses on the following program areas: science, children, populations, conservation, arts, film preservation and community.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation makes grants through two major integrated programs - Human and Community Development and Global Security and Sustainability - and two special programs. The Program on Human and Community Development supports national research and policy work and - in Chicago and Palm Beach County, Florida - direct local efforts. The Program on Global Security and Sustainability focuses on arms reduction and security policy, ecosystems conservation, and population, and on three cross-cutting themes: concepts of security and sustainability, new partnerships and institutions, and education about United States interests and responsibilities.

The Sloan Foundation offers grants for research in science and technology, standard of living and economic performance, and education and careers in science and technology.

The Russell-Sage Foundation has four areas of current program concern: causes and consequences of the decline in demand for low-skill workers in advanced economies; adaptation of second generation immigrants to American society; improving relations between racial and ethnic groups in schools, workplaces and neighborhood settings; and improving literacy among disadvantaged students.

The Ford Foundation has three main program areas: Peace and Social Justice; asset building and community development; and Education, Media, Arts and Culture.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation funds efforts to improve life for disadvantaged children in the U.S.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has three main program areas: assure access to basic health care for all Americans at reasonable cost; improve service provision to persons with chronic conditions; and reduce harm caused by substance abuse.

Chicago Community Trust is a local foundation funding health, social services, civic affairs, education, arts and humanities work in Chicago.

The Spencer Foundation focuses on improving education. They are located at 875 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 3930, Chicago, IL 60611 and can be reached at (312) 337-7000.

American Medical Association Foundation supports traditional research on medical conditions like leukemia, cardiovascular disease and arthritis as well as innovative projects that are rarely funded through traditional sources. Special grants are available to hlep start young researchers on a path to lifelong investigation. One area of new interest is applied research that promotes disease prevention and wellness, reaches underserved populations, and communicates medical advances to doctors and patients. The Foundation is also interested in studies that focus on the pressures and constraints faced by physicians as well as programs for mid-career physicians interested in increasing their research involvement. The Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation makes grants for journalism, communities, education and citizenship.

Sara Lee Foundation makes grants on topics of women, culture, hunger and people in need, primarily to the arts (authors, visual and performing artists) but it also supports a science education project.

Motorola Foundation supports programs at the local level and some at the national level that strengthen pre-K through college education and serve under-represented populations. Priority areas include enhancing pre-college math and science education, improving pre-K education, improving parental involvement, preserving solid education environments, and reaching under-represented populations in the areas of math, science, engineering and business. About $6.5 million is awarded annually. Awards range from $1K-$10K. The are located at 1303 E. Algonquin Road, Schaumberg, IL 60196 and can be reached at (847) 576-6200. Their deadline is Sept. 15.

National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world.
