Chapter 1

Tammy lay there in tears as visions passed through her mind. It was 9:45 p.m. Her eyes slowly closed due to a lack of strength. She kept her troubles to herself. Her ex-best friend had betrayed her -- again. She didn't know what to do anymore, or if there was anything she could do. Tammy wasn't as willing as Kailie was to let Haylee go. After all Haylee had been Tammy's best friend since kindergarten, or at least so she thought. Of course that obviously meant nothing to Haylee. There were so many elements that had built up this anger inside Tammy. She felt she had nothing to live for. Haylee had taken away everything that had been important to her, and more.

It was 6:30 a.m. when Tammy woke up to the sound of her little brother screaming while running back and forth down the hallway. "AARON SHUT-UP!" she howled at her five-year old brother. He soon became silent. She lied there for a while and then got up and rummaged through her drawers for something to wear. 'Aw man,' she thought, 'I don't want to go to school. '

"Hurry up!" her mom shouted by the front door. Tammy, used to being in this situation, was ready in five minutes. By now it was around 7:30 a.m. When Tammy arrived at school she was greeted by no one. Tammy did have friends. Lately though she felt that she wasn't wanted anymore. She felt alone in her troubles. So Tammy stood there, leaning against a pole, looking out at all the kid's on the school ground. Tammy was quiet and always seemed be in deep thought. She was rather shy and had a problem with changing colors. Tammy was about 5'5, with soft brown eyes, and natural blonde hair that fell just past her shoulders.

"Hey Tammy," greeted a voice from behind. It was Kailie. Kailie was very outgoing and talkative as opposed to Tammy's reserved nature. She was perhaps the only person Tammy could trust. But at this point Tammy was holding back her trust for fear of history repeating itself.

"Hi," she answered.

"KAILIE!" someone screeched. A short stubby girl waddled over. It was Melissa. Eight other girls followed her. "Hi Melissa," Kailie plainly answered. "Oh brother," Tammy sighed under her breath. The eight girls surrounded Kailie while Tammy was left lingering on the outskirts of their little gathering. The bell rang after about fifteen minutes of monotonous gossip about a guy named Chris. Tammy turned and started up the hall. Another boring day had begun.

Tammy took her seat in the back of the class and waited for the tardy bell to ring. The bell rang.

"OK everyone, quiet down. Today I am going to pair you up for your presentation." Groans could be heard throughout the classroom. The teacher began reading names in pairs of two, "Kelly and Penny, Chris and Casey, JC and Tammy, Jeff and Bonnie." JC turned around and looked blankly at Tammy then turned back. 'Oh this is just great. How come I have to get stuck with pretty boy?' Tammy complained to herself. The teacher came to the last pair and said," "Your project will be due in one week. You will not be given time in class to work on it." His words didn't bring Tammy's spirits any higher.

JC was your typical jock. He was part of the track team and the wide receiver for the school football team. JC was perhaps one of the most popular guys in Orangedale High. The difference between him and most other popular people is that he wasn't stuck up (like society has told us) and he didn’t have an ego that was ready to explode instantly. Tammy was yet to find this out. He hung out mainly with four other guys. Their names were Justin, Joey, Chris and Lance. They were always around people, usually girls.

The bell rang for the next class. The sound of bustling papers and books filled the room. Soon it was time for lunch. Tammy walked over to the PE locker rooms to see the results for the Olympic games. The Olympic games were basically an annual track meet held every year around the first week of May. Tammy scanned the lists for her name. Tammy was quite athletic. Though, lately she hadn't been doing as well as she had hoped. Out of seven events, she qualified for four of them. They were the 400-meter dash, the 400-meter relay, the triple jump and the shot put. Just then Haylee and Jennifer, one of her recruits, walked up to Tammy. "Move," she blurted out as she pushed Tammy aside. Haylee had bleached blonde hair with dark grayish roots. It was obvious that she used shampoo to make her hair lighter then discontinued it due to others disbelief that was her hair color was natural. Her hair stopped at her neck just above her bony shoulders. Her frame was frail with little curve.

"Oh my god, Haylee you made every event!" squealed Jennifer.

"Of course I did," she replied conscious that Tammy was still behind her with Bob and his friends beyond her. She turned to face Tammy and pulled back her shoulders.

"When did you get those?" Tammy asked sarcastically pointing to Haylee's chest. Haylee's boyfriend Bob was standing a few yards behind Tammy with some of his friends laughing. Bob was a skater as well as the rest of his friends. Haylee was what you would call a poser. She only skated so she could be called a skater and maybe get a few cute boyfriends while she was at it. Tammy skated every once in a while but didn't take it as seriously as Haylee did.

"Well at least I have some," Haylee shot back.

"Have some what? Push up bras?" Tammy snarled. Bob and his friends went in to a laughing frenzy. Some toppled over in hysterical laughter. Haylee's face reddened as she walked off with Jennifer trailing after her. There were only three more periods after lunch. Before long the time had come to start home. Tammy headed for the back entrance. She was stopped by a voice.

"Hey Tammy! Wait Up!" She turned to find JC walking after her.

"Look, I have to go. I don't want to do this project anymore than you do. How about I do half and you do the other half and-" she was cut off.

"I was thinking more along the lines of a phone number," he said confused. Tammy's face went blank just before the blood rushed to it.

"Uh, my phone number?" she asked quite embarrassed.

"Yea, if that isn't a problem." - JC

"Oh no, hang on." She pulled out a pen from her pocket and went on a search for paper. She put her hands in her pockets searching desperately.

"Here." JC extended his hand. Tammy looked up and saw that he was looking back. She quickly looked down and began to write the digits.

"There," she said almost not sure of herself.

"Kay thanks," he answered. And with that she turned around and left.
