It was Saturday afternoon. Kailie had flown to New York to visit her cousins. Tammy was in her room on the computer. It had been two weeks since her project with JC. Tammy would see him show up mysteriously at places she went to throughout the week. The Olympic games had passed. Haylee, like Tammy had predicted was the queen and JC was the king. Tammy didn't place in any of the events she qualified for. Haylee had gotten first in all but one of her events. Haylee had deprived her of everything. JC didn't remain a stranger through her time of troubles. Instead he waved when he saw her and started minor conversations that didn't last very long. The phone rang. Tammy picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Hi Tammy!"
"Oh hi Kailie! So, how is everyone?"
"They are fine. I'm flying in tomorrow. My mom is making me go to school Monday." - Kailie
"That sucks." - Tammy
"I know. Well I gotta go now I'll talk to you tomorrow." - Kailie
"Ok." - Tammy
"Later." - Kailie
"Bye." - Tammy
The next morning Tammy got up at 7:00. The ringing of her phone awakened her.
"Hello?" - Tammy
"Hi. Tammy its Laney."
"You could say hi to me at school you know." - Tammy
"Actually, I can't. I'm moving, today." - Laney
"What? You've got to be kidding me!" Tammy was afraid of losing another friend.
"No." - Laney
"Well, what happened?" - Tammy
"I'm moving to Maryland. I don't know why. I only found out yesterday. They have a house set up and everything. " - Laney
"This isn't happening. How could life get any worse? Did you tell Kailie yet?" Tammy
"Yea, I hope life doesn't get any worse or I'll have to kill myself." - Laney
"Heh." Tammy sniffled and blinked in hopes to hold back the oncoming tears.
"Well, I have to go. I'll call as soon as I can." - Laney
"You better." - Tammy
"Bye Tammy" – Laney
"Later Laney." As she hung up the phone a single tear fell from her eye.
That day Kailie didn't show up for school like she had said she would. Tammy was left alone for the whole day. During lunch, she sat under the tree she and her other friends usually sat at. The only difference was that she was alone. JC, and one of his friends, Justin, approached Tammy.
"Hello." She answered questioning herself we they were even talking to her in the first place. JC sat to Tammy’s right and Justin sat next to him. Tammy looked at him confused, as she searched his face for and answer as to why he was there. "Soo, what do you need?" she asked assuming that was the only reason they were there.
"Actually I was wondering where Kailie was." Justin blurted before JC had a chance to say anything.
"I don’t know. She went to New York. She said she would be back today but she didn’t show."
"What was she doing in New York?" – Justin
"She was visiting relatives." Tammy said as she noticed Chris approaching.
"Hey everyone. Hi Tammy." Chris took a seat next to her.
"So why do you want to talk to Kailie?" Tammy asked turning her attention to Justin. JC snorted," He wants to ask her-" Justin face quickly grew stern and jabbed JC with his elbow. "Ow," JC said rubbing his arm. Tammy had a look of bewilderment on her face.
"Well, actually, I kinda sorta wanted to ask her out," his last words were barely audible. He slightly blushed as he looked down. Tammy chuckled in disbelief.
"Well, I can’t help you," she paused for a moment, "unless you want me to have her call you. I’ll give her your phone number if she calls tonight if you don’t want to wait till tomorrow. " – Tammy
"Ok,< do you have my number?" – Justin
"No." – Tammy
"Ok, here," he took a pen and a piece of paper from his pocket and scribbled down his number. He handed it to Tammy.
"Ok," she said in response.
"Thanks Tammy. I owe you one." Tammy smiled slightly and said," No, it’s ok. This one’s on me." Soon after about 7 more minutes of talking the bell rang and all parted to go to class.
That night Tammy received a call from Laney but no word was heard from Kailie. Tammy thought nothing of it. She figured she had gotten sick or something and didn’t go to school. Why she didn’t call was a question Tammy forgot to ask herself.
