Chapter 7

When JC arrived at school the next morning Haylee confronted him.

"Hi JC!" – Haylee

"Uh, Hi." – JC

"Yea, um, soo, are you going to the prom with anyone?" - Haylee. JC stared in disbelief.

"Uh, actually, I’m not---yet." - JC

"Oh really!" her voice squealed," I’m don’t have a date yet either! Isn’t that weird!" – Haylee

"Uh, Yea that’s nice. Gee look at the time, I gotta go now," he turned around and walked away quickly leaving Haylee there snickering. Jennifer turned around from the background in which she had faded.

"Well, did he ask?" – Jennifer. Haylee’s eyes looked in the direction JC had left and squinted in disgust.

"Not yet," - Haylee

That day after school was the tryout for the talent show. Tammy gathered with the others who wanted to try out in the cafeteria. She wrote her name on the sign up sheet and left for the restroom to change into her dance attire. When she re-entered the room, the lights were turned off and the spotlights were turned on. Tammy found an empty corner and sat down to wait for her turn. Haylee was the first to be called. She sang or at least she tried to sing. Tammy covered her ears in disgust to her annoyingly off tune voice. Soon after three or four more people had gone up they called Tammy. She went backstage and handed her cassette tape to the person who was operating the music. It was Joey. He took the tape and looked at Tammy.

"Knock em' dead," was all that he said to her. She wondered if he even knew what she was doing. She decided to ignore what he had said and give her performance. Matt had helped her prepare a portion of her original specifically for the tryouts. She got into her beginning position and waited for the music to begin. About half way through the performance Matt walked through the door. Joey was watching Tammy with his jaw glued to the floor. Matt moved through the crowd that had collected. The song she was dancing to was Mandy Moore's "I Wanna Be With You." Matt finally made his way backstage. The last words were sung and Tammy froze in her ending position. The crowd roared. Tammy gave a bow and exited the stage. Matt ran up to her and hugged her. Joey watched with a puzzled smile on his face. She left right after. Tammy didn't care to see the rest even though she didn't know who was still to come.

After Tammy had gone Chris went backstage with Joey. JC came in after.

"Joey, have you seen Tammy?" - JC

"She left with some guy. You have to go on soon." - Joey. JC felt a sudden jolt in his heart.

"I know. Do you know who he was?" - JC

"No, I don't think he goes to school here." - Joey. JC was relieved. It was only Matt.

"Oh man, she has to be here what are we going to do about the dedication? Oh man." - JC

"Well, just skip it today and say it during the show."- Chris

"Ok, I gotta find Justin. We go on after these guys are done." - JC. JC turned around and disappeared into the crowd.

Four days passed since the tryouts. Tonight was the big night, the performance. Tomorrow night was the prom. Tammy was at the dance studio with Matt preparing for her performance.

"Are you nervous?" - Matt

"No, not really. Just butterflies." - Tammy

"I wonder if that JC guy is gunna be there." - Matt

"I hope he's not." - Tammy

"Why?"-Matt

"Are you kidding? How embarrassing would that be." - Tammy

"I think being embarrassed is the least of your troubles." - Matt. Tammy stood up and looked at Matt in bewilderment. "We should be going now." - Matt

"Ok lets go." - Tammy They both exited the building and got into his car.
