Zoe nodded, she had decided to do this, and so she was going to.
Taking a deep breath, Zoe ran and lept off the cliff in front of her. “I’m a leaf on the wind,” she shouted, a smile on her face, as she plummeted to her inevitable death.
Mal blinked a few times, his eyes wide in confusion, “doc, tell me we didn’t just see that.” He looked over at Simon who was currently helping him land Serenity on the planet Orion. They had been coming to pick up Zoe.
Simon nodded, not fit for words at the moment. He was too busy keeping his shock in check and manning the controls on Serenity.
“Huh,” Mal exclaimed, “I never pegged Zoe for the jumping type.” Mal was torn in grief, but at the moment he had other pressing matters to attend too. Like the fact that their landing was not going so smooth. “Pull back, on that thing a ma jig,” Mal shouted, “were going to crash.”
Simon rolled his eyes, “you mean the break.” And he’s the captain, well at least he's pretty. Oh, man why did I just think that? Simon gritted his teeth, pulling the break on his side, as Mal did the same on his side. Serenity bumped and skidded for awhile but safely came to a stop.
“Cap,” Kaylee screamed, rushing into the cockpit, “what was with that landing?” She put her hands on her hips, “you’d think you’d have landings down by now.”
“Sorry, Kay,” Mal looked down, “the doc and I saw something that distracted us from landing properly.”
“What could of possibly distracted you enough to nearly crash and kill everyone,” Jayne shouted, having overheard Kaylee and Mal’s conversation? He walked into the room, being followed by River, who was clinging to his arm, tears streaming down her face.
“In a moment,” Simon shouted. He glared at Jayne, “what did you do to her?”
Jayne tried to shake the girl off, but she wouldn’t hear of it, and clung to him harder, “don’t go jumping to conclusions, Tam. As soon as this rig started to shake she grabbed on to me, crying.” He shook his head, “I ain’t got no clue as to why.”
Simon nodded, not quite sure if he believed the mercenary, but he let it go, “what’s wrong mei-mei?” Simon got out of his seat and went to Rivers side, kneeling next to her. Little sister.
River let go of Jayne and fell into Simon’s arms, “she’s a part of the wind.” She cried, “I saw it, and I couldn’t do anything.”
Simon and Mal paled. They knew what the somewhat crazy psychic was talking about.
Jayne and Kaylee on the other hand was confused beyond words. “What’s she going on about,” Jayne demanded to know.
Kaylee nodded, “yes I’d like to know as well. Dong Ma?” Understand?
Mal sighed, pointing out Serenity’s window.
“What, that’s just a cliff,” Kaylee said.
“Here’s how it is...The reason we almost crashed is because the doc and I spied our Zoe,” he looked away from everyone, “committing suicide. She jumped.”
Kaylee and Jayne gasped, not expecting this. Tears formed in Kaylee’s eyes, and Jayne blinked his eyes a few times. He had always liked the dark skinned solider. Wash’s death must of finally got to her.
“Wuh de tyen, ah,” Kaylee cried, falling to her knees. She was surprised when Jayne crouched down and pulled her into his arms. “Lao-tyen, boo,” she cried hard on Jayne’s shoulder. Dear God in Heaven/Oh, God, no.
Simon nodded, “yeah, we all feel that way.” He blinked back tears.
River started to shake her tears flowing harder, “my fault, my fault,” she clutched Simon harder, “what good is seeing if I can’t do anything.”
Simon frowned, holding River tighter to his chest, “shh nyen ching-duh, no body blames you.” Little one.
River sniffed looking up, “really?”
Simon and the others smiled and nodded, “Dahng rahn.” Of course.
River smiled, wiping her tears off her face, “thanks...Hey,” she gave Simon a look, “don’t call me nyen ching-duh. I’m seventeen for crying out loud.” Little one.
Simon chuckled, “sorry, mei-mei, I guess I still think of you as my little baby sister.” Little sister.
Everyone lightly laughed, Simon probably would always feel this way about River.
“Um,” Kaylee stood up, “Mal, are we sure that Zoe is...you know?”
Mal looked up at Serenity’s ceiling, “Kaylee do you have any idea how far that drop is?”
“No,” Kaylee quietly whispered.
River was staring at something nobody else could see, “far,” she whispered, “far as in forever.”
“What she said,” Mal walked over to River, “what do you see, River?”
River smiled a eerie smile, “water, lots of water. Deep. No bottom. Far as in forever.”
Jayne made a ‘huh’ face, “Dung ee-miao, Je shr shuh muh lan dong shi,” he looked at Mal, “do you know?” Hang on a second, what’s this garbage?
Simon glared at Jayne, “BEE-jway,” he looked at River, “mei-mei, what do you mean?” Shut up.
River smiled, a normal one. “Alive. Never wanted to die. Fun. Splash.”
A wide grin spread across Kaylee’s face, “okay I think I get it.” She looked at everyone else, “don’t you all get it?” She looked at River, “you’re saying, Zoe wasn’t jumping to kill herself. She did it for fun, and she landed in water.”
River nodded. In her first vision all she saw was Zoe jumping and she thought the worse, and in the second vision she saw, Zoe lazily floating in the water, humming something.
Mal snapped his fingers, “Dahng rahn, there’s a big bottomless lake at the bottom of the cliff.” Of course.
“Well that’s a crazy way to have fun,” Jayne muttered.
“Yeah, but who cares, lets go get her.” Kaylee ran out of the cockpit and started up the mule. Jayne, Mal, Simon, and River followed her.
“Hatch open,” Kaylee yelled.
Simon pushed a few buttons and the hatch opened. Everyone but Simon got on the mule and left Serenity. Simon closed the hatch behind them and climbed on the mule.
