Punktuation-Describe your music for everybody. (Mainly those idiots who haven't heard it yet!)
Mephiskapheles-Hmmmm. Mephiskapheles' music is a conglomeration of old school ska, jazz, punk rock and rock and roll...we are not what I consider a ska-core band, but we're not trad either...a mix of styles, with a swinging horn section and an aggressive rhythm section...
P-Why did you choose to be a satanic ska band?
M-It chose us...Actually, it was pressure from my parents-they wanted us to do something with all the stuff we learned at Satanic School. It wasn't our choice...
P-Do you guys get good good reception from people by being known as a Satanic Ska band?
M-Yeah absolutely. People like the freedom of it. No constraints or restraints. It's a civilized approach to a musical style. And why should heavy metal bands be the only ones to have any fun? Seriously though, if you don't get it in the first 30 seconds, you never will.
P-Is it true that you can take over people's souls on stage?
M-Well, we CAN, but we don't. Except on Halloween in NYC. Then we get it all!
P-Do you enjoy Bumblebee Tuna?
M-Like nothing else in life.
P-Is it true that you're here to do Satan's work?
M-Are you kidding? I am not here to do my own work, much less anybody elses. Let him do his own damn work!
P-How is the ska music scene down in NYC?
M-There's a monster scene in NYC-bands like The Bluebeats doing rocksteady and, you guessed it, blue beat: Urban Riot and Oxblood doing the oi! and Edna's Goldfish, Insteps, Inspector 7, ECT ECT! doing the ska-there's a great scene here...
P-Are you guys currently on tour?
M-Ask me that in 3 weeks when we've started our 7 week tour with The Blue Meanies.
P-Do you have any plans to come up to Canada?
M-As far as I know, Canada is on the itinerary, the people are scared to go there-we got strip searched last time we went up to Toronto. We had a gig there with The Buzzcocks and at the 'Peace Bridge', they strip searched us and kept all our merchandise. We had to pay $400 CAN to get it back-which goes to show they don't know how much it's worth!!!
P-How can everybody hoook up with your CD: "God Bless Satan"?
M-Simply by sending $12 US (made out to Mephiskapheles), to Mephiskapheles, 319 W. 38th St. RH. NYC, NY. 10018. USA.
P-Do you have any plans for any upcoming releases?
M-We hope to have a new CD out by the end of the year. We have the material, but not the $$$!
P-Do you guys have any influences?
M-Yes, of course. I am personally often under the influence.
P-Can you suggest any upcoming ska acts?
M-Spring Heeled Jack (on Moon Records) and Baccone Dolce (from Florida). Both are excellent bands!
