For the "Recycled" tape on RRReecords

Foutredieu!!! "Recycled" CS 6/10 - [RRRecords]
Surprisingly enough, simply because this is somewhat of a "novelty" release, this is the most consistent and mature material I've heard from Foutredieu!!! to date. Lots of feedback and reverb, some melodic but highly fucked with piano/classical music samples (I think?) at times… but usually it's just this moaning sort of twisted feedback that's fairly deep and resonant with thick, crackling distortion subtly affecting it. The cassette offers up a great mix of ambience and tactful harsh noise ("harsh" used loosely there), and I really like the obscure melody that's underneath everything, gently flowing to the surface on random occasions. This is one of those rare recordings that makes me somewhat curious as to what the source sounds are, because it sounds like there's a lot going on that can't be deciphered - intentionally. If you don't know the drill with this series of cassettes from RRRecords, the material is dubbed over a pre-existing cassette and packaged in its sleeve with tape across cover and the artist's name written in marker down the side spine. This one's one a George Jones tape in the sleeve for some Solid Gold sampler/compilation or whatever, from way back in 1982. Very nice. Coincidentally my individual copy is rather brief, and I think that helps everything flow all the better, as it doesn't have enough time to drag on, and the repetition remains hypnotic and effective. Some of the other copies may perhaps run a bit long, but this is nice. I certainly hope this is a sign for the future of Foutredieu!!! material to come… Running time - 30:00 (approximately), Tracks: 2 [Notable tracks: everything is untitled] Foutredieu!!! - http://www.foutredieu.cjb.net

For the "UNTITLED #1" 3" CDR

From Aversionline July 2003
Foutredieu!!! "Untitled #1" 3" CD 6/10 - [Brise-Cul]
This 21-minute 3" CD EP is limited to a mere 25 numbered copies and contains three ambient tracks, which to date have been fairly uncommon coming from Foutredieu!!! "At the (Atlantis) Gates" begins - a remix of songs from a band called Atlantis Gates (apparently a local power metal band) - using obviously sampled, but very cool manipulations of clean guitars and synths through its hypnotically repetitive nine minutes. It's fairly smooth and full, though there is a little bit of a hitch when the playback switches over to backwards from forwards, but just barely, and it's not really disruptive. "Soyez Résolus de ne Plus Servir…" is much shorter, sounding strangely like some sort of twisted progressive rock keyboard textures. Everything is deep and melodic, with a spoken word passage (in French) up front under some effects. The speaking is mixed far too loud and peaks to distortion at times however, also disrupting the calm melodies of the background tones, which can be frustrating. But this would be a great piece were it instrumental. "Tséjthaty (Sonate a la Douleur)" is the least melodic of the three compositions, also bringing in some lightly distorted textures and percussive layers amongst its deformed piano melodies and other brooding tones. The liner notes state that this track may or may not have been recorded at the same time as the "A-402 (My Own Prison)" release. The CD-R (which sadly has sloppy and tacky handwriting all over the face) comes in a tiny slim jewel case with an opaque yellow tray and a small xeroxed booklet with high contrast imagery of a mohawked punk and the band name layered on the front, while the back lists the songs and minor recording details. The center spread is mostly white, with "Sid Vicious is not dead… you are…" written across the center in bold type. I'm not sure I understand the connection there, but hey, whatever. All in all this is a nice release. I'm glad to see the project continuing to expand, and I think this is a very promising direction that, with a little bit more fine tuning, could yield impressive results. Very nice. I hope to hear more material like this from Foutredieu!!! in the future. For the "A-402(my own prison)" CDR

From Worm Gear zine's web quickblast reviews March 2003
FOUTREDIEU!!! - A-402 My Own Prison
This is a CDR release, from this French Canadian project. Ranging from deep pulsing Death Industrial to grating hi frequency squalls, Foutredieu!!! covers their bases. A white noise din lays the bed for screaming hi end electronic squirms and scrapes, biting sound choices that cut right in. This is then juxtaposed with low end rooted tracks that throb and drone as the world crackles and rattles about them. Even at it's harshest moments "A-402 My Own Prison" maintains a semblance of ambience and atmosphere, melancholy and tormented as it can seem at times. I personally preferred the tracks (no titles on here) with the low end foundation and spacious dissonance to the burning hi's, but then I'm using headphones... There is a nice mix of presentation and some really sound composition on some of these tracks that has me curious to hear more form this project as they are handling all aspects quite capably. The last track is a bit of a surprise, cheap beats and processed spoken word, but being in French I have no clue what they are saying. - Scott BRISE CUL

Foutredieu!!! - A - 402 My Own Prison CDR
I love the title to this. It makes for a good warning of what's to come. Very moody and seething sound scapes, it is not as harsh as I would have hoped, but well orchestrated and very spooky in some parts. I get the idea that this would be perfect for some Science Fiction flick. Building loops submerged in static and sprinkled with weird Theremin like squeals in the background make this a good disk to listen at night with some candles burning and a cup of whisky to keep you warm on these cold winter nights. Foutredieu!!! "A-402 (My Own Prison)" CD 6/10 - [Brise-Cul] Canada's Foutredieu!!! takes another significant step forward with this, their third foray into experimental noise. Like their last release the material seems a bit more pointed and mature, and the tracks are also noticeably shorter, some running less than a minute. All of the tracks are untitled, falling under the heading of "A-402 (My Own Prison)", aside from "Balade" - which is called a "bonus track" (it consists of programmed beats and altered French vocals, so I'm not really sure what that's all about). Of the "A-402…" tracks, the opener is one of the few distinctly ambient tracks. It's followed closely by a harsh and loud piece that is slightly typical in its use of distortion and earsplitting treble, but not your usual wall of thick noise. The fourth track is a good example of an excellent harsh composition, because it's got the grating high-pitched squeals and some painful distortion going on, but it's a minimal structure, balanced out nicely by some midrange feedback hums. Midway through the disc track six offers a nice sort of death industrial soundscape. An almost subtle melody creeps into the distance beneath some midrange distortion that sort of swells back and forth. The tenth and final track of the "A-402…" series runs a whopping eight minutes - by far the longest track on the entire disc, it definitely leans toward the dark ambient side of things atmospherically. There are lots of low tones, it's very light on the distortion… fairly menacing, especially the little loop in the background, which is slightly musical. One thing that I don't like is that most of the tracks just cut to a close at the end. It's just like a long piece was chopped short for no apparent reason, there's no flow from piece to piece or logical ending to each song, which confuses me a bit since the first ten track all fall under the same group title. The recording isn't bad, but I think things would sound more powerful with more high-end and more low-end. Right now things are relatively clear but most of the tones feel like they're inching towards the middle rather than covering a wide range. The packaging is a definite step up from previous Foutredieu!!! releases as well. Everything is still black and white xeroxes, but the images are a bit clearer, the layout a bit cleaner, and the visuals/text applicable to the concept of the release. The CD-R comes in a slipcase where the front and back covers show a prison wall with an armed guard looking into the distance, and inside there is a tiny booklet with a small photo of prisoners, some contact information, and a few lines of text such as, "Smash the walls of your own prisons…" Not bad overall. It's nice to see that the project has been consistently developing with each release. I hope that trend continues… Running time - 30:34, Tracks: 11 [Notable tracks: all are untitled] Brise-Cul Records - http://www.brise-cul-records.cjb.net

For the "Noizuja(a jazz tribute quintology)" CDR

FOUTREDIEU!!! / NOIZUJA (A JAZZ TRIBUTE QUINTOLOGY) / CD-R / BRISE-CUL RECORDS / youth
Paper sleeve, no disc label but mine does say its a "promototype", insert which expresses this french canadians affection for jazz ("hated by millions, including nazis, and liberation soundtrack for others") .... i really like this one for it carries no real pretense about it especially considering its jazz "related" idea. sounds are ever manipulated to the extreme, loops in and out and in... and yes, there are a few moments when jazz samples do creep in, but the sonics come in annihilating that. right harsh at times. not really cut-n-paste more like feed-n-bleed several channels at once.

From Aversionline October 2002
Foutredieu!!! "Noizuja" CD 5/10 - [self-released] Thus far each release from Foutredieu!!! has been more serious than the last, and the five tracks on this 30+ minute CD-R continue that pattern. With this outing the mullet obsession has been laid to rest in favor of a tribute to jazz music, heralded herein as the "20th century's subversive music". Opening track, "Straight Birth of the Blue Change", starts out with a quick piano loop before heading off into all sorts of sundry noisescapes for more than six minutes. At times somewhat ambient, at times blaringly harsh, with a few subtle samples of jazz music tucked away in portions of the background. This pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the disc - never too harsh, never too ambient, always feeling improvisational, etc. "En Avant La Zizik" is more of the same, with some dissonant samples of manipulated horns twisting and turning beneath churning loops and hums. "Blue-Noted Self-Abuse" starts out with another jazz loop that includes piano, drums, and upright bass, quickly jumping into a chaotic blend of noise before later bringing back some sampled piano and drum parts. "68 Chandelles Pour Saint-Germain-Des-Prés" is more than eight minutes of insane noise with tons of stereo panning, only bringing the jazz influences in on rare occasion with an oddly melodic horn passage. And closer "Recuperation (Straight Death for a Blue Change)" is more consistently harsh than some of the other tracks, also utilizing a few snippets of jazz throughout. Overall the compositions here are slightly more involved than they were on the "Mullet it Be" CD, though still fairly minimal as far as layering is concerned. But I think that more thought is going into the tracks now, both as far as arrangements, and as far as actual tones and subject matter/inspiration. The recording is also a bit cleaner, which certainly helps. The disc comes in a xeroxed slipcase with an insert that includes only text regarding the release. This is definitely the strongest release yet from Foutredieu!!!, but I think the next logical step in the progression will be to increase the quality of the releases' visual appearances, while still maintaining the simple, D.I.Y. aesthetic. Regardless of the fact that some of these tracks are a bit long, and that the release as a whole is somewhat stagnant, the total running time is kept to a reasonable length, and the music is starting to warrant a more interesting visual approach to complement the work. We'll see what happens, but I think good things are to come… Running time - 32:42, Tracks: 5 [Notable tracks: Blue-Noted Self-Abuse, 68 Chandelles Pour Saint-Germain-Des-Prés] Foutredieu!!! - http://www.foutredieu.cjb.net

Much better than I expected. Much better than the last 5 Merzbook cds that i foolishly bought. If you like loops of jazz processed beyond recognition, then you should pick this disc up.

For Mullet It Be CDR

From Aversionline August 2002
Foutredieu!!! "Mullet it Be" CD 5/10 - [Brise-Cul] The mullet-obsessed Canadians are back, this time with a totally D.I.Y. CD-R that is far, far stronger than their "Live and Mullet Die" CS. Whereas the cassette release was somewhat of a joke (banging on pots and pans, random screaming vocals, a little bit of electronic fiddling, etc.), "Mullet it Be" is a full-blown experimental harsh noise jaunt, complete with blaring treble, crunching loops, monotonous electronic hums and drones, and so on. It's not over the top distortion compressed to peak volume levels at all times or anything, there are dynamics, so don't expect a dense wall of impenetrable noise. The compositions tend to be lo-fi and somewhat minimal, but there's definitely a good deal of subtle layering going on, and they do have a lighter, more ambient side tucked away amidst the chaos as well. Samples appear on rare occasion, which I like a lot, and there are a few instances where stunted melody seems to peak through, which is also cool. Of course it's not the most original thing in the world, and with a total running time of about 45 minutes it can get tiring. But at the same time, when held against their previous release this is a massive progression, and if they continue to grow at such a rate they'll really have something going for themselves. The disc comes packaged in a plain white sleeve (taped together with masking tape) that has some xeroxes pasted on the front and back, plus an amusing insert. The insert has pictures of trading cards from some sports figures of yesteryear who were basically hiding mullets under their baseball caps. It's evident from most of the song titles that Foutredieu!!! hasn't lost their sense of humor ("Foutredieu!!! to the Dancefloor", "How I Realized That Plastic is My Favorite Food", etc.), but at the same time they are taking a more serious turn with a few suggestive titles like "Slavery Through Everyday Life" and "A Bible, a Gun and Charlton Heston", among others. That's always a good thing. Not bad, hopefully they'll continue to record and keep getting better. I'm really pleased with the advancements shown on this release. Oh, and it's numbered of 50 copies, so…

Foutredieu – Mullet It Be CDR
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this CDR… but, the first 32 second track is worth getting the CD. Be careful, it could really screw up your speakers. The rest of this little surprise is much of that like any homemade, underground music… but, this in a way is serious and playful all in one… There are some sound bites that I think will make my babbling a bit clearer when you hear them. Some pieces are political and others crammed with loops that would make you think that the government made them for mind control. Tracks 4, 6, and 12 were my personal favorites and I suggest going to the mp3 site at artists.mp3s.com/artists/...edieu.html to get an idea of the quirky, harsh noise that MARTINITFOR has been creating. The new track is a perfect example of loop torture. Check out Foutredieu’ site at www.angelfire.com/punk2/i...edieu.html for more information.

For Live And Mullet Die

Foutredieu!!! "Live and Mullet Die" CS
2/10 - [Brise-Cul]
Nice. True noise from these mullet-obsessed Canadians. I'm talking banging on pots and pans and burping type shit. Plug in a microphone and choke yourself over a distorted loop or some feedback. Or at least that's how it starts out. The actual electronic noise tracks are very minimal, with only one or two layers in many cases. At one point some radio starts to come into the background, and there are also some unusual keyboard manipulations towards the end of side B. I can't really tell where one track ends and another begins. For the most part everything sort of sounds the same after the first few minutes, just using different tones. Half of side A is blank, and latter 1/3 of side B is empty as well. I'm not sure why? The xeroxed layout includes a full "band lineup" with photos of totally dirty mullet-headed hicks. The photos are hilarious, but really… the mullet craze that is sweeping across the world right now is really driving me nuts. Track titles like "Mullet City" and "Mullet in the Head" do little to amuse me, but for some reason I got a kick out of "Intestinal Mullet". Go figure. I mean, this is sort of funny, but the sounds aren't really any good. I can't really listen to this. The joke is funnier than the actual execution, and I'm unsure of what they're truly going after. Though, I have been told that the band's "motto" of sorts is that "it's better to fail at originality than to achieve mediocrity..."
