The Phantom Tollbooth
Most people I know have never read this book... or they've only read it when they were ye high. That's not right. I got the book when I was in third grade, read it in a day, read it again the next day, and the next, and even now I pick it up every couple of months just to read. Whenever someone asks me "Damn. How do you write like that?", I tell them to go fuck themselves... er, to read the Phantom Tollbooth. This book has wonderful wordplay, turns language about in every way imaginable, turns words 360 degrees on itself, and is everything within it is a metaphor. It's not the type of book you understood in kindergarten... What sort of six year old understand the genius of quotes like "It's more imprtant to know whether there will be weather than what the weather will be?" I didn't. And as far as six-year-olds go, I kick ass. | |
