In this section, I'll be introducing the various beaches in
Singapore.
East Coast Beach
The East Coast district, out towards the airport, has a popular beach with recreational and dining facilities along the foreshore. East Coast Park has swimming, windsurfing and bicycle rentals.
Sentosa
This is the most developed island- it's rather plastic, although very popular as a local weekend escape. Entry to the island is S$5. Most attractions on the island cost extra but monorail and bus transport on the island is included in the entry cost. Attractions here include the informative Images of Singapore museum, with waxwork figures showing Singapore's history and festivals. Underwater World is a spectacular aquarium where the marine life swims around and over you while you move along an acrylic tunnel. Entry is S$12. Fort Siloso with its WWII displays is worth a visit. Sentosa also has sports facilities and Singapore's best beaches.
Kusu Island
This island is not as developed as Sentosa but there are ferry trips several times a day to this island. Tiny Kusu has a Chinese Temple and a Malay Shrine. The round-trip ferry costs S$6.20. It is crowded on weekends. Kusu means "turtle" and there are several legends surrounding Kusu Island and turtles rescuing shipwrecked (and sick) sailors and/or turning into an island for them to land on.Kusu has a very nice swimming lagoon and plenty of space for picnickers. Large trees and fragrant flowers abound but it's not wilderness: nature has been tamed here. Still, it's great to see families playing together, away from the hectic urban atmosphere.
Pulau Ubin
Pulau Ubin is the most interesting of Singapore's northern islands as it still has a rural feel and can be explored by bicycle- a good day trip. Bumboat ferries to Pulau Ubin leave from Changi Village and costs S$1.50 per person.
