There is some kind of twisted logic in releasing a Greatest Hits album before you've actually had any greatest hits, and perhaps that's why this album is not the most popular Chili Peppers effort. From the point of view of a devout fan with every single album (what do you mean STOP TALKING ABOUT YOURSELF?!), it's a fast-paced look back in time to the early days of the RHCP, when the sock thing was still mildly amusing and funk was the order of the day. From the point of view of your mother, it's obscenely-worded trash with a lot of hard rockin' beats thrown in to be a bit more shocking. From the point of view of just about everyone else, it's just a hastily-thrown-together collection of kinda popular tunes, half of them B-sides and maybe one or two of them that ever even lingered on the edge of the pop charts, which suggests that around 1992 the Peppers were, shall we say, a tad short of cash.

The singalong, dreamy ditty, *Behind The Sun*
The fast 'n furious *Knock Me Down*
And, you guessed it, the classic *Under The Bridge*..altogether now, "I don't ever wanna feel like I did that day.."
But whichever way you see it, it's not rubbish, it's not pointless, it's kind of interesting, and a must for any funk-lover or v v v hardcore RHCP-lover. But anyone else, you're way out of your depth. Go home and pop on some Nirvana before things get too alternative and scary for you.
