I do love cities and had plenty of time to inhale Bangkok (Krung Thep), along with that polluted air. Blech! I loved the city, but found it a bit much after I had a coughing fit one night. Still, I love cities and I think Bangkok is quite a stereotypical city: It's huge, it's the only metropolis in the country, there is no end to the entertainment there, it has plenty of culture, it has an international community, it's congested with traffic problems, and it's polluted.
Note to self - for future visits avoid walking along busy exhaust-filled boulevards. Just pay the 40 baht and take a taxi.
This is a view from a Skytrain station, around 50 feet in the air. So we're looking across at the top apartment of what is probably a 6 floor building. I like the picture because it shows the different faces of Bangkok side by side: laundry out to dry in the air, a spirit house perched on a perch near 2 satellite dishes, a lot of antennae, and skyscrapers dominating the skyline.
Vendor of insects to eat. My best guess/memory From the left clockwise: crickets (big beige compartment), cockroaches (chocolate brown on top), grubs (beige), silkworm cocoons? (big brown bugs on right), and ??? (yellow-beige & covered w/ foil).
I found that most of the insect vendors didn't like farangs like me taking pictures. This particular vendor wasn't in a touristy area and I think that's why he was a little more willing.
Chatuchak weekend market is in the background. It's a wonderful place to spend all day (or a few days) shopping at.
I actually saw a few different guys in Thailand with this style shirt. I don't see this same "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" shirt as often in S.F.
Bangkok has hordes of stray dogs wandering about, some of which are quite ragged (they don't put their strays to sleep). Their nickname is "soi dogs". "Soi" is slang for a smaller sub-street (alley).
This picture is a little pun. It's a Soi Dog sleeping amidst the nightlife in Soi Cowboy.
Yes, that's a dog. A good example of a ragged mutt. You can also make out another dog sleeping under the vending cart. And whatever they're selling is going for 5 baht (the owners of the cart, not the dogs).
This was taken between Saphan Taksin Skytrain station & the river ferry.
I think this photo was taken of the same spot on a different day. The same 2 dogs were hanging out around the same cart.
I've seen both Los Angeles (city of angels) and Bangkok (city of angels) and I'll take Bangkok any day.
