Dear Ninja,
I come to you as a fellow Ninja for advice. I have this friend who is lonely and depressed and incessantly begs that I kill him. Can a Ninja perform a mercy killing? Is it ok for me to kill someone who only wrongs me in the hope that he will be killed?

Ninjaboy,
You pose an excellent question. Unfortunately, it is by no means a yes or no question. The best way to tackle this question, is by using an analogy. Here the best would be if the question read, "Is it wrong for a doctor to perform euthenasia?" In my opinion it is the duty of the doctor to perform the duty that alleviates suffering and thus I feel euthenasia is well within the this duty and coherent with the hypocratic oathe. On the other hand, it is important to remember that this duty is in the service of the individual and his or her family. Thus, if the individual does not wish to die and would rather follow a different course it is his or her that has final say. In addition, the wishes of the family also must be taken as a stong consideration. Returning to your question specifically, yes a ninja could commit a mercy kill. But, and I start a new sentence to add emphasis, this is only uder the most extreme circumstances (POW camp extreme). These are circumstances that very very rarely occur in everyday life. In the case of your friend, I would say a mercy kill is not in the least bit justified. Let me say that I have labored in the pits of loneliness and do not doubt the genuine suffering of your friend. Also, I have witnessed first hand how devastating depression can be, I would elaborate but ninja code forbids one from telling another's dark secrets in open forum and without extreme nessecity. I have, though, seen depression defeated and pheonix like change in seemingly lost individuals. In short, it is your duty as a ninja to help your friend in the truest sence and guide him to help and growth, whatever nonlethal course that may take. If a ninja were to perform a mercy kill in the situation you have presented he or she would not be a true ninja and would stand as a disgrace. You must view your friends depression as a most unrelenting, violent, and skilled threat. It is the goal of this depression to destroy your friend and rob him of his future. When your friend asks for death, he is controled by the depression and to give in would be to surrender. Also, if your friend is serious, you must make sure that the depression does not spread. When he speaks it has taken control of his mind, it is imperative that you make sure the depression does not take control of his hand. In closing remember this, a ninja never betrays friend or family. To agree to an emotional mercy kill or allow one to take place would be to ally with evil and betray what it is to be ninja.
NINJA FUN FACT: Santa Claus is one of the worlds greatest ninjas. Who else but a true ninja master could enter so many homes undetected with so much baggage in so little time as a single night.
