Bob Dylan Live 1979-80
Bob Dylan hit the road November 1, 1979 with a new album, Slow
Train Coming, selling briskly and another album-worth of new,
unreleased, material in hand. Unknown
to the fans filing into the Warfield Theater in San Francisco that evening,
Dylan was determined to make a dramatic break with his past performing career
in favor of these new songs and the message they carried.
The entire autumn tour
followed the pattern set that first night:
Regina McCrary Havis’ introductory monologue; six traditional spirituals
performed by the three backing singers; the first half of Dylan’s set dominated
by songs from Slow Train Coming, an interlude comprised of the
unreleased “Covenant Woman” and a song performed by one of the backing singers,
then a second half dominated by as-yet unreleased songs eventually to appear on
the Saved album. Dylan
and the band would then return for two encores; a rollicking rave-up (still unreleased)
“Blessed is the Name of the Lord” and a monumental “Pressing On.”
In retrospect, the
coherence of Dylan’s musical vision is clear and its execution is admirable, particularly
as complements to the studio treatments of these compositions on Slow
Train Coming and Saved.
However, it is more difficult to recall the disorienting, even
traumatizing, effect these concerts had within the popular press and among
Dylan’s fans worldwide.
The live recordings from
this tour reveal a very different response from the concert audiences
themselves. There were certainly some
hecklers. Regina McCrary’s monologue on
the first night was interrupted by a coordinated demand for “Rock-n-roll!” from
a few in the audience. The November 26th
show in Tempe, Arizona is marred by repeated angry yells from an audience
member. But these exceptions prove the
rule: The audience response each night is overwhelmingly positive -- often
ecstatic – despite the overtly religious tone; despite the fact fully half of
the songs performed were completely unfamiliar to them; and despite Dylan’s
clear intention to abandon all which had come before. One recording of the November 1st concert runs for ten
minutes after the final encore while, with the lights raised, the audience
chants and claps for more. A security
guard can be heard finally ushering them out.
Dylan and the band appear to feed off the audience response
as the tour progresses. The first five
or six performances at the Warfield Theater sound tentative at times and
contain a number of minor miscues. In
the latter half of their residency in San Francisco, solid arrangements of
every song emerge and the performances gain momentum. Where “Solid Rock” marches on November 1st, it has
begun to purr by November 6th, and fully roars by the 14th. The November 16th concert, their
last in San Francisco, takes on the character of a graduation, Dylan expressing
his affection for the city and his reception there, though clearly ready to
take a polished show down the road.
Dylan and the band next perform four concerts in Santa
Monica. The Santa Monica audiences are
loud and enthusiastic towards Dylan’s professions of faith, though individual
hecklers can be heard at times. One
commercial bootleg taken from a Santa Monica show is aptly named, “Preaching To
The Converted,” no doubt inspired by the rapturous audience response these
recordings reveal.
The tone is distinctly nastier as Dylan and his band travel
to Tempe, Arizona for two concerts.
During both concerts individuals relentlessly and aggressively heckle
Dylan, much to the dismay of the larger audiences. Both nights, Dylan responds to the heckling with extended
monologues regarding biblical prophecy and asking that the house lights be
raised. Dylan orders the house lights
to remain on during much of the second concert and chooses not to perform any
encores.
Back to California for two concerts in San Diego, both
strong performances, the first marked by a revealing monologue. Dylan recounts how a year earlier, prior to
his conversion, he had played a concert in San Diego in a state bordering on
despair. An audience member during that
concert had thrown a silver cross on to the stage and Dylan remarked how he
knew he had to “pick it up.” Dylan suggests,
obliquely, that the appearance of the cross, and the gesture which brought it
to his feet, marked the beginning of his conversion. Dylan then thanks the audience member for the cross.
After nearly a week off, Dylan and the band travel to New
Mexico for two shows in Albuquerque and two more shows in Tucson, Arizona which
close out the autumn leg of the tour.
All four concerts are very strong.
Overall, the autumn leg was, and still sounds like, a
tremendous artistic success. Dylan
seems more focused, more dedicated to the songs he’s performing, and less
obscured by the spectacle of his stardom than at any other time in his career. There is a freshness to these autumn
performances – and to Dylan’s own faith -- which slowly fades with winter. Dylan increasingly launches into monologues
regarding biblical prophecy and impending cataclysm. Early on, he presents Judgment Day as a simple statement of fact,
inviting the audience to acknowledge its truth. Whether provoked by accumulated public criticism, shouts from the
crowd, or something else, by late November these “raps” lengthen and grow more
ominous. Come January 1980, a more
determined, less inviting Dylan will emerge.
The wonderful majesty of the unreleased songs will strangely elude capture
in the recording studio during the Saved sessions in February. By
the following November, little hint remains of the unique energy which suffuses
these autumn concerts. Fortunately, we
have the recordings.
