The Way of The Harper
The way of the Harper is twenty-times bold,
A gracious, strong, difficult path to walk.
He must be a musician and nice to behold,
but skilled off the harp in all ways of talk
four times eight at least his voice must climb,
three instruments at least know his touch
and skilled of course in ways of prose and rhyme.
Homer and The Bard he memorizes much.
If English's his language, Iambic the verse
that first his skill must prove without doubt
in sonnet or epic, prayer or curse,
he sings unaided in twice-five...or thereabout.
Next Latin, then Greek, harper knows both,
Of Arthur and Achilles he sings with ease
Roland, Aeneas, of men of the oath.
Harper knows when his song should teach, bring peace,
Start wars, chaos decry or a leader soothe.
This knowledge, plus Talent, is the Harper's way
And increase in it he must until his death's day.
