May 1st 2001 - Violence in Video Games: How far back can the blame go?

courtesy of cagle.slate.msn.com

Well, I figure it's about time we attack the big boys. As this charming little cartoon has hinted, people seem to be fixated on scapegoating. Columbine, California, angry parents and students are looking for someone to blame, and why not go for the easiest way out? Controversial as it may seem, I love to cause trouble, but blaming games isn't the answer.

Columbine. Even two years after the brutal school shooting that caused so much shit to hit the fan, that name still fills people with conflicting images. Two tortured youngsters with access to firearms (lousy yanks) and a chip on their proverbial shoulder the size of greater manhattan. With all the shit flying in so many directions from hitting that fan, with school stabbings, shootings, violence and terrified parents looking for someone to blame, it's no wonder that the blame lands on the easiest whipping boy: video games.

They SAY that the two dorks from Columbine (yeah, this may be controversial, but I hate those guys!) spent hours a day playing DOOM, and THAT is why they killed their classmates. THAT is why they say that they showed such proficiency with firearms. This is such a pathetic argument that it still boggles my mind. I played DOOM as well, hell, I played Half Life, House of the Dead, Quake, Unreal... name any first person shooter (arcade or PC), I've probably had a piece of it. I've also done paintball, but it didn't help MY aim any (ouch...).

Let's get away from the case study for a moment. On bolt.com, I read a board post asking "Are RPG games evil?". The person specifically detailed that they meant NOT console games. To this, I replied that it was ridiculous. It is not the games themselves that are evil, it is the person's reaction to the themes portrayed in the game. For instance, it's not Dungeons and Dragons' fault if little Johnny from buttfuck colorado cuts up his pet rabbit for spell components. It's Johnny's fault for misinterpreting that the game's reality. It's Johnny's parents' fault for not monitoring Johnny's leisure time activities.

Now the american government wants more harsh constraints on video game ratings, or even a ban altogether on violent video games. Is this even a solution? Will this change anything? Will taking away a SAFE outlet for man's violent tendencies reduce violence in any way? Of course not. God forbid that they should spend the billions it would take to crush the video game industry on gun control or even taking away altogether firearms availability.

So I beg you, don't let them take away my games! It's not the answer!

Eesh, notice how my rants nowadays have gotten more and more serious? Don't worry, I'll go back to my usual tongue-in-cheek, satirical style after the world stops being so mother fucking stupid! (I tried to find the original report linking video games to real-life violence, but I came up short).
