Black Snakes
Black Snakes are quite common as well in New Jersey. They tend to frequent sheds and scrap heaps, and like to eat rodents and baby birds and other large forage items. Black Snakes can be very large, six feet and more, and are sometimes confused with the Black Racer. To tell them apart (read the Racer's info too), the Black Snake has a shiny complexion, is more difinatively black (not grayish), has smooth scales, and usually has a white area under the chin. Black Snakes often will not bite when handled. They are often seen on the roads, usually stretched right across the whole thing, and are often hit.
