Garter Snakes are definately the most common snake in New Jersey, and most of the states they populate. Almost everyone has seen and most have caught Garters. Garters are found in all sizes, nearly everywhere. They eat almost anything a snake can. Garters are a very gentle snake. Only a few feel inclined to bite, even when handled. If they do, it is most often a gravid (pregnant) female protecting herself and eggs and should not be bothered in that case for the sake of the babies. Garters are also one of the most widespread snakes in the U.S.
