LARP Frequently Asked Questions:

What is role-playing?

It’s like being in a character in a movie, book, or a play. You create a character and react to situations as you feel the character would. The storyteller creates situations, with other circumstances added by yourself and the other players.

What does LARP mean?

LARP stands for Live Action Role Playing. It is a type of role playing akin to those played with pen and paper or on a computer or console, but it is more involved. People get together, dress up in costume, and resolve conflicts with cards.

Is it dangerous?

No. There is no drinking or drugs, live violence, or sex. There is discussion of frank subject matter: such as child abuse, pregnancy, depression, etc. All conflict (whether mental, physical, or social) is resolved with playing cards.

What am I supposed to wear?

Costumes in a LARP range from the mundane to the insane. The biggest concern that people have is that they think they will feel weird if they dress up or they do not think that they can afford to do so. We have been known to help with costumes. ..and some characters do dress fairly mundane. . .although it is recommended to dress at least a little different than yourself, because it helps you get into character.

What kind of people play?

People from all walks of life play. We have had players from 17-65 in the game before. For legal reasons, we do not take players underneath 17 years old, but we take any sober person who wants to play and isn’t a threat to themselves or others. Some people have claimed that the game has helped them through some tough times psychologically or taught them about themselves.

Is it hard to play?

The rules are constantly being re-iterated and such. Someone takes you step by step through the character creation process, and you have a copy of your character during play. There are also plenty of players (as well as the Storyteller) willing to help you along the way. You would be surprised how easy it is.

What is the theme of the game?

The story is equal part fantasy and horror, using the best (and worst) elements of both genre. It deals with escape from a horrible place and the attempt to rebuild your life afterward.

When do you play?

First, Third, and when available Fifth Friday of every month. The game starts between 6:30 and 7:30, depending on the time of the year. If you are late, you can still come and play. . .sometimes, people come late or leave early. It’s no big deal.
