(Fathom's Portrait by Regina Carey)
Fathom & Private Athena both died on *25 ST 110 ADT. Athena
died of a poisoned wound.
Fathom committed suicide on realizing his Bondmate's death.
ATHENA & FATHOM
Athena had brown hair and hazel eyes. She stood 5 feet and 8 inches
in height,
and carried a staff as her only weapon. She spent years as a young
girl
fashioning it from the abundant materials of the forests and caves
near her
village on the western edge of the Con Cuisto.
Her childhood was very controlled and sheltered. She was found as an
infant by
her foster mother, Joann, who was considered eccentric by most. Abused
by her
father and brothers as a young girl, Joann taught a young Athena to
despise and
fear men.
"You must not be drawn in by their false promises," Joann had
told her about
males. "For their hearts and minds are not pure, and their intentions
are evil.
Good little girls who can resist this are rewarded. Bad little girls
who can't
are punished."
Athena had known about the Uen Roug for several years, and asked her
mother if
she could enroll at the Academy when she was but seven years old. Her
mother did
not approve of her choice. However, when Amaris was deemed Commander
of the Uen
Roug, JoAnn hesitantly allowed her to go. "Remember what I have told
you," were
her last words to Athena.
On her trip, she found a wounded barn owl, its wing torn by a predator.
It was a
young owl, and its mother was nowhere to be found. Carefully, she rehabilitated
it, and it came to befriend her.
She came to the Academy, and was misunderstood by some. She spoke cryptically
at
times, and used, as some of the students explained, "very big words."
But
somehow, she managed to fit in with the others, young enough that the
damage
done by her stepmother could quickly be undone.
Brimming with wisdom, Fathom is the type of 'corn that was born old.
He had a
wise answer or anecdote for almost any question, even if that answer
was more of
a philosophical truth than an actual concrete reply. This often
frustrated many
of his peers who did not understand that sometimes the only answer
to a question
is a question. For this reason, Fathom was more comfortable around
the Elders,
who had come to treat him as one of their own. His talent was a control
over the
tides. Average physically, Fathom's talents in battle were limited
to superb
defense tactics. He was a loyal and valuable companion.
