Strangle Vines
[aka gripper vines, grippers, creepers, crawlers, trappers,
and "those pesky vines"]
Strangle vines look exactly like normal vines. They live in swampy areas or along rivers where they have room to grow. The plant is actually many vines connected to a central root system. These vines spread out over an area, attempting to capture small animals. Once captured, the animals will eventually die and decay, adding their nutrients to the ground and consequently to the plant, which requires a large amount of nutrients to flourish. Luckily, the plant is fairly harmless to most humans and unicorns, both being smart enough to avoid them, or strong enough to escape should they be caught. There have been cases, however, where large strangle vines have nearly killed people who decided to set up camp too close to them.
The vines move fairly slowly, so the plant developed the ability to sense the movement of animals along the ground. As an animal approached, the vines would slowly move into position and lie in wait, ready to grab the animal when it came near. Despite what the name implies, strangle vines do not always strangle their victims. The plant is not intelligent. When an animal is in its grasp, the vines will squeeze until the animal's heart is no longer beating (remember it can sense movement along the ground, so the vines would have no trouble sensing a heartbeat while holding the animal). If the animal happened to be very large, more vines would join the original one to help kill its prey.
