Pan along the streets of Manhattan as the sun sets. We fade from its forever busy streets to an empty centre. Pan over to where Morgan is lazily spinning around a pair of swords. Pan over to the left and Jeff is sitting at one of the tables playing solitaire. Pan over farther and we see Eve and James at the bar finishing up some work. Eve looks over to James remembering a recent conversation they had. James sensing he's being looked at looks over to Eve. Upon being discovered, Eve looks back to her work. Suddenly Morgan slams the sword down into the wooden floors of the gym startling everyone.
James - Don't do that! Those floors are barely a year old.
Morgan - Where is he?
Eve – He is running unusually late. I'll give him call and see if he’s okay (picks up the phone as dials the number)
Morgan - I hope he is okay cause I'm going to kill him.
Jeff - (nonchalantly shuffles the deck) You're over reacting again
Eve - (on the phone) Craig? Hey! Where are you?
Morgan - (calls out) Tell him I'm going to kill him!
Eve - (turns around ignoring Morgan) You're where? Oh! . . . Oh no I understand. . . Do you want me to come with you? . . . Yes, we can handle it but promise you'll be safe. Okay, bye. (hangs up)
Morgan - Well?
Eve - Craig's not coming tonight. It's the ten year anniversary of his Grandmother's death. He’s going to his family tomb to honour her. Alone.
Morgan - (feels guilty) Oh.
Jeff - Apparently, she was the whole reason he began demon hunting.
Eve - Craig's grandmother pressed upon him the importance of their family legacy, the fight against evil. I know you him before all that Jeff but honestly I can't think of a day when upholding the honour of his family line wasn't foremost on Craig's mind.
Fade from the centre to Craig as he walks along a path in the cemetery in the dark.
Yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead
Yesterday is a promise that you’ve broken
Don’t close your eyes, don’t close your eyes
This is your life and today is all you've got now
Yeah, and today is all you’ll ever have
Don't close your eyes
Don't close your eyes
Craig clutches the flowers as he walks along. He seems to be lost in his thoughts
This is your life, are you who you want to be
This is your life, are you who you want to be
This is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
When the world was younger and you had everything to lose
Craig comes up to a huge tomb. ‘Evans’ is marked over the tomb's entrance. Craig goes over to the side. He reads the name Celeste Evans engraved on the side.
Yesterday is a kid in the corner
Yesterday is dead and over
This is your life, are you who you want to be
This is your life, are you who you want to be
This is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
When the world was younger and you had everything to lose
He touches the engraved name slightly and sets the flowers down on the ground below the name. He gets up and sighs. He begins to speak.
Craig - Ten years. It seems like an eternity. I've tried so hard to follow in your foot steps, to live up to our family legacy but I've done this so long now, I wonder if I do it only because I don't know how to do anything else. . . It's hard now to think of a time before I started demon hunting, back when I was younger.
Fade from Craig in the cemetery to a younger Craig sitting in a dimly lit room.
Craig – My grandmother is dying. She has done so much with her life and has made a difference. What have I done? Got drunk, hurt people, went to rehab (scoffs) Nothing for nobody. But there are people out there that I can help. I can protect this city, like my family has done for generations. I'm going to take on the fight and be a demon hunter. (looks over to his side) What do you think?
Pan over to the right to the other end of the couch. Alex who was watching TV turns her head slowly towards Craig with a bored look on her face.
Alex - I think you're off your rocker.

Craig stands at the Evens tomb looking at his Grandmother's name engraved on the side. He stands there looking old and worn. He lets out a small sigh and bows his head and mutters a small prayer
Craig hangs his head for a moment in silence. He looks up with tears in his eyes. He blinks them away and turns to continue on his way. As he turns though he hears a rustling. There is the sound of rustling leaves and it sounds as if someone is struggling.
Craig goes in to cautious mode as he brings out a small cross bow from the inside of his leather coat and looks around him. He hears the rustling again and looks up. He sees a young man on the top of the tomb. There is a rope tied around a branch of a tree and the other end tied to his neck. The young man stands at full height and steps at the edge of the tomb. With arms spread wide he teeters forward. Craig quickly ducks into a somersault and aims at the rope. As it is pulled tight he shoots the arrow and it goes through the rope. Craig then dodges toward the young man to catch him from the fall. The young man crashes upon Craig as he lands.
*flashback*
Craig drops a box on the floor.
Alex - (sarcastic) Ah Geez Craig, break all my stuff will ya.
Pan around the large space. We recognize it as Alex's loft but it is very bare and empty save for the boxes that are scattered around. Craig picks up the box and sets it on the kitchen counter.
Alex - When I asked you to help me move in I didn't think you'd trash it before I even got settled
Craig - Sorry. You don't have to do this you know. You'll always have a place at the house
Alex - (sighs as she opens a box and begins to unload and put things away) I know but I can't be mooching off your parent’s space the rest of my life. I'm twenty years old Craig I need to be out on my own.
Craig - How are you going to pay for all this?
Alex - Bobby's helped me invest some of my inheritance so for now I can use that but at some point I’ll need to get a job.
Craig - (begins to help unloading stuff) You were taking a few business courses at the community college. You have a certificate so you're qualified to do something.
Alex - Oh uh huh, yeah, like what? What the hell do I know about running a business? Nothing.
Craig - You could have gone to NYU
Alex - And waste my inheritance on path I'm not sure I want to be on. Sorry Craig but University is not for people like me. I've got no direction in this life.
Craig - Well I'm not exactly sure what direction I'm supposed to take in this life either.
Alex - I thought you wanted to be a cop like Jake, Jack or what ever his name is
Craig - Jeff, yeah he's the guy I met at rehab. He said a police officer helped him get sober. He was pretty inspired. He was going to enroll the academy after he got out. I was inspired by the story myself and becoming a cop seemed like the obvious course of action. I don't think my grandmother likes the idea though. She says cops get in the way. Whatever that means.
Alex - Is that why you're trying to get your masters?
Craig - Yeah I thought about it and maybe becoming a professor and helping other people find their own path is another way I can make a difference. Grandma seemed to approve too.
Alex – How’s she doing anyway?
Craig - (sighs) Not good. She's getting weaker.
Alex - (sighs and stops what she's doing and goes over to give Craig a hug) I'm sorry Craig. I know you're really close to her. She's a good woman. She was always very kind to me even when I didn’t deserve it.
Craig - I was going to go see her later. You wanna come?
Alex smiles and nods. Fade from the scene to later in the day in a stark, sterile hospital room. Craig's grandmother lays in the bed sleeping lightly. She turns her head when she hears a slight knock at the door. Pan over to door where Craig and Alex stand.
Craig - (goes over to hug) Hey grandma!
Alex - (waves a little) Hi Celeste
Celeste - (happy to see them)Craig, Alex! Oh child! What are you two doing here?
Craig - We came to see you. How are you?
Celeste - (gets a slightly perturbed look on her face) Dreadful! I don't know why you're mother insists on keeping me here. I'd rather be back at the Manor in the time of my passing instead I’ve been locked away in this sterile room all day.
Craig brings out a bag and pulls out some colourful cloth and concentration crystals
Craig - That's why I brought you these
Celeste - Oh bless you child!
Celeste takes the items with a smile but grabs on Craig’s palm before he can pull away. She traces some of the lines doing a reading. She looks at him
Celeste - Are you still going to your A.A. meetings?
Craig – (smiles)Yes!
Celeste - Continuing on with your lessons at NYU?
Craig - Yes
Celeste - Still reading my book and practicing?
Craig - Yes
Celeste - Good. (looks to Alex) And how are you Alex?
Alex - Fine. Craig's been helping me move into my loft but we thought we'd drop by and see how you were doing.
Celeste - (smiles and looks between Alex and Craig) Best Friends until the end. Your devotion to one another never ceases to amaze me.
Craig – (getting a little embarrassed)Ah grandma . . .
Celeste - Don't be so modest. You have faced many trials through the years and you have remained by each other’s side. I leave this world knowing that in dark times you will have each other to turn to and you will be all the stronger because of it.
Alex - (confused) Dark times?
Celeste - (sighs) You two are still so naďve to the evil of this world
Alex - (jokes slightly)Are you sure? We do live in New York.(Craig looks to Alex sternly and she quickly silences) Sorry
Celeste holds out her hands to Craig and Alex, each of them takes one. She squeezes their hands tightly
Celeste - Listen to me, both of you. Life is not easy and your friendship will be tested. But I believe in the strength and purity of your friendship, you will see these dark days pass into days of hope and renewal. Keep the faith and keep faith within each other.
Celeste slowly brings Alex's and Craig's hands together to hold. Alex looking very uncomfortable lets her hand drop.
Alex - Do you want some coffee or something? Something to drink, eat? I mean I know hospital food isn't exactly the best but I'll see what I can find.
Alex backs out uncomfortably and leaves the room. Craig looks to his grandmother and shrugs before he pulls a chair over and sits down. Celeste looks back to Craig and shakes her head.
Celeste - That child will have to face her demons one day. As we all must do. (focuses on Craig) Craig when I have gone you will also have to face the dark reality of this world. It can be . . .disheartening.
Craig - Grandma don't talk like that. The doctors are doing . . .
Celeste - Craig, the doctors can't do anything. Death is a natural part of life. Mortality is not negotiable. I accept that and so must you. Now listen to me child and try to understand what I must tell you. This world, this life . . . as much as it is filled with life, there is also death and darkness.
Craig - I know Grandma.
Celeste - (sternly) Craig you haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what you think you know. I know your mother never wanted to me to place upon you the path that our family has followed for generations but I hope I have at least instilled the importance of our heritage, of what we've done. My family has followed the ways of the Messenger of Eli, fought by their side. We’ve continued the fight even after the last Messenger died nearly one hundred years ago. And that day was dark indeed, the presence of hell mouths have increased at an alarming rate ever since.
Craig - What are hell mouths?
Celeste - Hell mouths are gateways to the realm of hell. Although humans cannot go in, demons can come out. They capture souls, they damn people, further polluting this world with evil, allowing enough hell mouths to open to create a hell on earth!
Craig - (is getting alarmed and tries to leave) I think . . .
Celeste - (grabs Craig's arm and holds him in place) If this continues the earth will be so full of evil that Lucifer, the devil himself can enter this world. It has already begun. Craig for many years I have tried to protect this city and the people of this world like those of our family who have come before. They have been able to pass on their gifts and knowledge but your mother wouldn't have any of it. Craig, I have fought for years but it will have meant nothing if this city can no longer be protected. You hold such promise Craig, you have the potential to be the greatest of all the Evans and take on our mantle.
Craig - Grandma, I . . . I don't know if I can. I'm not . . . I don't know where to begin. I don't understand!
Celeste - (relaxes a little) You will in time. You have the skill and the power. Consult the book. Utilize its words and lessons. These will be the tools you will need to continue my mission. If you should ever need help just read the book, look to the east and call upon the Messenger of Eli.
Craig - (unsure of himself and nods weakly) Alright.
Celeste - (takes his face in her hands and kisses his forehead lightly) Oh my darling grandchild. Only you who have known the darkness can know the light. You are the one to lead, you are the best person to show them the way. Embrace your legacy Craig. You are a demon hunter.
*end flashback*
Craig back in the present in the dark cemetery groans as the young man who has promptly fallen on Craig gets up from the ground upset and mad. He brushes him self off and shakes off the hurt
Young Man - Why did you do that?! Dick!! (walks away)
Craig - (gets up wearily and in some pain, follows) A simple thank you would have sufficed
Young Man - I didn't want you to save my life. I wanted to end it!!
Craig - Can I at least know the name of the guy that I saved for no reason?
Young Man - F OFF!!!
Craig - Interesting name.
Young Man - (stops and turns around angry) Leo. It's Leo. Now will you leave me alone!!(turns and walks away)
Craig catches up with the young man and steps in front of him to block his way.
Craig - Sorry, can't do that. You know those who attempt suicide and fail are likely to try again.
Leo - That's the plan! (tries to bypass Craig but Craig blocks his way)
Craig - And that's why I can't let you.
Leo - You want me to punch your face in?
Craig - No, but go ahead and try.
Leo - (his bluff being called tries another tactic) Why do you even care?
Craig - Let me ask you this. What is so horrible and wrong in your life that you think it can only be fixed by killing yourself.
Leo – It won’t be fixed, it will end. That’s all I want. I just don’t want to this anymore.
Craig – What happened?
Leo – I have nothing . . . and what’s really pathetic is that juvie’s the only home I’ve got cause my parents don’t want anything to do with me.
Craig - There are ways to fix that.
Leo - What's the point?! Nothing makes a difference!!
Leo pushes past Craig and runs out of the cemetery
COMMERCIAL
Cut to Leo in a drug store. He walks up to the counter will an arm full of bottles full of pills. He piles them on the counter. The cashier looks down at the pile of bottles then looks back up at Leo with a cocked eyebrow. Just then Craig comes up and puts his arm around Leo's shoulder.
Craig - Whoa! I know you have a headache but dude this is overkill. Let's go
Craig drags Leo out of the drugstore.
Cut to outside where Leo shrugs off Craig's grasp.
Leo - Overkill was sort of the idea
Craig - Is everything really so bad that you can't change it?
Leo - All I want is to end it!!
Craig - All I want to know is, why?
Leo - Why do you even care? I don't know you.
Craig - Because believe it or not I understand the desire to end it all, to make the pain just stop. But my friends helped me and I came to realize that I didn't need to die, that there were things that I could do to help me, to help others.
Leo - Oh yeah!! Tell me how I can make my girlfriend love me again or how I can make my parents talk to me again. It hurts! Everything hurts so much. Everything would just be better if I were dead!
Craig - You won't know that for sure because you won't be around to see it. You want me to tell you what will happen . . . people will be sad for a day maybe a week but then everyone will move on.
Leo - Is that supposed to make me feel better?
Craig - No it's supposed to make you see that your death won't change anything. Bad things happen, people have gone through far worse then you but they don’t kill themselves, they go on.
Leo - I can't go back, not after what I've been through. I've lost everything.
*flashback*
Alex and Craig are sitting in her loft. It's dim room with only the light from the TV shining. Craig is up and pacing around. He looks excited where as Alex is looking confused as she sits on the couch watching him go back and forth.
Alex - Have you lost your mind?!
Craig - No, for the first time in a long time I actually think I'm in my right mind. I'm going to do it. I'm going to go out be a part of my family legacy, I can make a difference.
Alex - Okay Craig, think about what you're saying here. You want to make a difference by protecting this city and its people from what . . . the boogie man?
Craig - Alex, the balance has shifted from good to evil. We are no longer free to make or own choices. This world is being terrorized. Demons infect the world and humanity. But we can protect them, we can give choice back to humanity, we can give them a chance to change for the better. Just like my grandmother!
Alex - Whoa Whoa Whoa! We?
Craig - Yeah! You and me! Grandma taught you almost everything she taught me!
Alex - I sat in on those lessons with you because I . . . (stops herself) Because I had nothing else to do.
Craig - There is no one who can accept the truth like we can, who can fight it better then we can. We can learn together, we can fight them together. There is no one else.
Alex – Let’s say for a second that I do believe in "demons" and that we really can help people in this way. How are we supposed to fight them? These things have supernatural strength, right? We are two humans with no weapons and no knowledge of such things. Who do you think I am Craig? Wonder Woman?
Craig - We can get weapons. Alex, demons are real, evil is real and we have an obligation to protect this city, to preserve the balance and help people!
Alex - Don't get all preachy on me! Okay, so evil is real and personified in demons. But why do we have to stop it? Why you? Why me?
Craig - I've felt so empty for so long. After rehab I've been so lost but now, for the first time in a long time now there is this spark of hope. Maybe this is what I've been waiting for, and maybe this is a way I can make up for all the hurt I've caused.
Alex looks up at Craig with new understanding. She thinks about it for a moment.
Craig - Don't you want that? A path in life, a chance to something for the greater good, chance to be apart of something bigger then yourself?
Alex - Yes. . . (nods) Okay. I'll help you!
Cut to the next day. Alex and Craig are looking around an armory. Alex is looking at a cross bow as we pan over to Craig at the counter looking at the guns. Craig looks up at the sales clerk.
Craig - It's got to be powerful, but concealable and it's got to do a lot of damage.
Clerk - Going hunting?
Craig - In a manner of speaking.
Alex walks up and puts the cross bow down on the counter she looks at the guns being shown to Craig
Alex - Guns? Does that work against demons?
Craig turns his head slowly towards Alex, astonished that she would say that out loud. The sales clerk looks at both of them and then puts the guns away quickly and grabs the cross bow away from Alex
Clerk - Get out of my shop. Weapons aren't for crazy people.
Cut to Alex and Craig in Craig's house. Craig angrily takes off his jacket and throws it on the couch.
Craig - Why'd you do that? You can't go around spouting off things like that! People are going to think we're crazy
Alex - We're not? (Craig gives her a stern look) It was a reasonable question. We've never done this before, how do we know what works and what doesn't.
Suddenly there is a knock at the door. Craig opens the front door. Two men walk in with a huge trunk. They set it down in the living room. One holds a clip board out to Craig.
Man - Sign here
Craig - (signs the board and hands it back) Wait what is this? Who is it from?
Man - (looks at the clip board) Um . . . your inheritance. From your grandmother.
As the men leave Craig reads the letter attached to the trunk while Alex goes to open it.
Craig - (reading the letter)Craig, in aid of your fight, I've provided the tools necessary. Use them well.
Craig looks to Alex next to the now opened trunk, it's filled with cross bows, arrows, crucifixes, stakes and swords.
Cut to late in the night in a cemetery. We pan through the headstones to where Alex and Craig are. Craig is at the side of one tree looking about him cautiously armed with a sword. On the other side of the tree Alex is leaning against the trunk half asleep. Craig hears a slight snoring and looks around the tree.
Craig - Alex!
Alex jumps awake and holds up the sword very clumsily.
Alex- Wha?! Wha?!!
Craig - Were you asleep?
Alex - Trying to! Remind me why we're here again
Craig - Cemeteries are prime stalking grounds for demons.
Alex - (looks at her watch) Ah geez Craig it's nearly dawn. We've been out here all night with no sleep and no sign of demons or anything remotely evil. Forget it Craig! You're quest for salvation is a wild goose chase.
Craig - What are you saying? That my grandmother was lying, that's she's crazy?
Alex – She could have meant any number of things. Face it Craig, there is no such thing as demons!
Craig - Duck!!
Craig pulls Alex down as a hand scratches along the trunk of the tree. They look up and see a green scaly demon. Their eyes go wide and duck and roll away from the demon.
Craig - You were saying?
Alex - I retract my previous statement.
Alex and Craig stand up to face the demon. It bares its teeth growling. Two other demons appear behind the first one.
Alex - (backing away slowly and clearly frightened) Three to two. I don't like those odds.
Alex turns around to run away when she comes face to face with another demon. It swipes a hand at her that she ducks.
Alex - Four to two! Even worse!
The demon jumps up and kicks the sword out of Alex's hands. It then jumps up and tackles Alex down. On the way down Alex is able to flip the demon over her. Alex gets back up but a second demon lunges for her legs and sends her crashing down.
Cut to Craig faced with two demons. The first scaly one swipes a hand at Craig, which he ducks, and the demon gets it's hand stuck in the trunk of the tree. The second one lunges for Craig. Craig jumps back and swings the sword. It just scrapes along the demon's chest. It lets out a shriek and lunges for Craig again.
Cut back to Alex on the ground. The demon scampers over and gets on top of her. It starts scratches at her face and arms as it opens it's mouth wide looking like it will bite her head off. Alex lets out a squeal and then jabs her thumbs into the demons eyes. It lets out a shriek and Alex's uses this distraction to kick it off her. Alex quickly gets up. She sees the sword on the ground and quickly picks it up as the first demon she was fighting comes running over. Alex quickly turns around and jabs the sword into the demon's stomach. The demon stops and stumbles back and takes the sword with it. It looks down at the sword the grabs it and pulls it out. The demon is unharmed. Alex's eyes go wide.
Cut back to Craig who ducks as the demon flies over him. The scaly demon finally gets his hand out of the tree and swings again at Craig. Craig dodges to the side and brings his sword down cutting off the demon's hand. The demon let's out a loud shriek before it cocks its head to the side. Craig looks down and sees another hand grow from the demons arm. Craig decides it time to make a run for it but as he turns he comes face to face with the other demon. Craig swings the sword haphazardly around and brings it down but the demon catches the sword and dislocates Craig's shoulder. The demon kicks Craig in the back of the knees and Craig goes down on his knees. The Demon opens its mouth wide.
Cut back to Alex. The demon now has her sword. It swings the sword at Alex but she ducks. The sword slices off the head off the demon that was coming up behind her. The demon falls down dead. Alex sees this.
Alex - What the . . .?
The first demon squeals bringing Alex back to attention. She kicks the sword out of the demons hand then kicks it hard in the gut winding it a bit. Alex uses this time to get to the sword.
Cut back to Craig. The demon it about bite Craig but Craig punches it in the face first. The demon stumbles back. Craig shakes his hand out because it hurts. The demon shakes off it's own hurt and jumps at Craig. Craig swings his sword around clumsily and accidentally slices off the demons head. The demon falls down dead. Craig stands there surprised.
As Alex gets the sword. The first demon is about to attack her again but the first rays of sun as the dawn breaks makes him stop. As the sun continues to rise the demon scampers off. The demon who had its hand cut off by Craig also scampers off deeper into the wood.
Alex - How about that! They're scared of the sun. (she looks to Craig) Craig?
Craig is still standing there beside the headless demon. He is shocked. He looks at the sword covered in green ooze as they rays of sun burn the demon to dust and is blown away in the morning breeze. Craig quickly turns around and throws up.
COMMERCIAL
Craig and Leo are there sitting on the bench.
Leo - I feel so lost.
Craig - We all feel that way sometimes but we all don't just give up
Leo - What's the point in trying to fight through it?
Craig - Life is the point! It's worth living! I've been where you are. I've seen things that would turn your world upside down. I've done things that I'm not proud of. I've hurt people and have been abandoned. I've been lower then the bottom of the barrel. With every horrible thing, I felt more of my innocence slip away and my soul being torn out bit by bit until I felt had no soul left at all.
Leo - So, why didn't you end it?
Craig - I tried. I couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to end it all. Some days I still do
Leo - Who stopped you?
Craig - The people that I love. That's why I go on. For them.
Leo - I've got no one. No one out there loves me enough.
Craig - That's your problem. Once you stop living for yourself and live for others instead, you'll start to see the value in all life.
Leo - So how you do live for others?
Craig - Everyone who chooses a path of selflessness do it in the way that feels right for them. (more to himself) I fight against the evil forces that would seek to destroy those I love.
Leo - (looks at him unbelievingly) Evil forces?
Craig - (sighs)There are forces in this world that seek to destroy all that's good and decent. These kinds of "beings" will do anything and will hurt anyone to get what they want. But people like me and maybe even like you can stop them. That's why forces and fate align against us. Everything is done to make us stop caring, stop fighting because when we do, they win. They destroy the very best in humanity.
Leo - You think I can make a difference in this world?
Craig - Why not? There's a reason we were brought together tonight. Maybe it's to help you realize that there is a greater purpose for you in this life. There's still hope left but you got to be willing to put a little work in.
Leo - (sighs and listens a little) So, what so I have to do?
Craig - You can start by going back to school, the tax payers pay for that so why not? There are youth shelters you can go to, places that will help you get set up on your own but can also help keep the lines of communication open with your family.
Leo - It sounds hard.
Craig - Of course it's hard. It's supposed to be. Nothing worth doing is easy.
*flashback*
Fade from Craig's face to a younger Craig sitting in a hospital with a stoic look on his face. Pan over to Alex beside him. The doctor is bandaging up the scrapes on her arms.
Doctor - You kids are in bad shape. What happened to you?
Alex and Craig are reluctant to answer
Doctor - Were you in some sort of fight?
Alex - (quietly) Yeah
Doctor gives them both a stern look but then walks off and the nurses follow. Suddenly Craig gets up and walks out of the room.
Alex - Where are you going?
Craig - To see my grandmother
Alex - But we're supposed to . . .
Craig is halfway down the hall before she can finish
Cut to Celeste's hospital room. She is sleeping soundly Craig walks in and sits by her side.
Craig - Grandma?
Celeste wakes up slightly but looks very weak. Slowly she turns around and is surprised to see Craig
Celeste - Craig what are you doing here? It's early
Craig - (looking defeated) Grandmother I've failed. I went out and I accomplished nothing. I . . . I killed.
Celeste - (weakly) Oh Craig. . . . I'm . . .I'm so sorry to have placed this burden on you. You understand so little and I have asked you to do too much.
Craig - I thought I could handle it. I wanted to make you proud and make a difference but I can't. I'm too weak.
Celeste - No . . . no Craig you are not weak. You are stronger then you know. To kill a demon is not like killing a person with a soul. Demons have no soul, their only purpose is death and destruction. I know it all seems very bleak and dark but you must continue on Craig you must fight for the good of us all.
Craig - I can't . . .
Celeste - You can!! There . . . there are people who will . . . train you. Craig you must continue on. There will be times when it will get worse and you will want to give up. . . but even the smallest change for the good can change the course of the world. If you stop caring, evil wins. So even if you can't do it for you, do it for those you love.
Craig - It's too hard
Celeste - Nothing worth doing is easy
Craig - Grandma, I don't know if I can . . .
Celeste - You can Craig. I believe in you. If you keep on living, keep on fighting, there is hope for us all. Please Craig . . . please . . .
Celeste lifts her hand to Craig's cheek just slightly before it falls. Her eyes go blank.
Craig - (surprised) Grandma? (panicky) Grandmother!!!! (puts his head down on his Grandmother's chest and cries, realizing what has happened)
Fade from this scene to later on. Sun is streaming through the windows of a temple. Pan to down to see the many people seated for the funeral of Celeste Evans, funeral. We pan up to the front of the temple where Alex, Craig and his family are seated. Serena is crying silently while Bobby holds her. Alex looks saddened but Craig seems to be all out of tears. He has a sad look in his eyes but his face remains calm. We pan in for a close up on his face as the head of the temple closes the funeral.
Priestess(voice) -Oh Goddess there is great sadness a cherished one has gone. Emptiness engulfs us. Loss languishes within. Help us bear this grief. Accompany their spirit. Comfort we who grieve. Let us rejoice in their life. May their essence be recorded in the Great Book of Shadows. Renew our remembrance with joy as we say good bye to our sister Celeste Evans. Blessed be.
Craig - (among a sea of voices) Blessed be.
Cut to outside the temple. Craig rushes outside and practically rips the tie off his neck. He keeps walking like a man on a mission. Alex rushes outside the temple and runs after Craig.
Alex - Craig! Craig wait up!!
Alex finally catches up to Craig and grabs on to his arm to stop him
Alex - Hey! Craig . . . I know it's stupid but I'm sorry. Are you okay?
Craig - I'm going out again
Alex - Out? To do . . . (realizes what he's talking about) Are you nuts? Why?
Craig - Why are you trying to stop me?
Alex - Let me break it down for you Craig! We got our asses kicked! The clerks think were crazy and the doctors think we're gang members. We can't do this Craig.
Craig - Nothing worth doing is easy
Alex - Well no duh! But getting yourself killed won't make it easier
Craig - I going to get training. I'm going to continue on with my lessons in the magical arts and I'm going to contact my grandmother's contacts and do all the research I can. The next time I go out I'm going to be prepared!
Alex - But why?
Craig - I've got to do this Alex. My grandmother depended on me. She left me to protect this city. I won't let her down.
Alex - Craig you puked when you cut off that demon's head. Granted it was gross but it only proves that you are not a killer
Craig - No Alex I'm not a killer. I'm a demon hunter.
Craig walks off and Alex hesitates.
Alex - I don't know who's the bigger fool, you for going or me for following.
Alex runs after Craig.
Cut to a montage of scenes. Over the course of a few months Alex and Craig begin their training. While Craig continues his studies at NYU he contacts certain professors and people that his grandmother knew and begins to research on demon physiology and the demon mind. He learns all he can about ancient civilizations and beliefs. Alex takes first aid courses and advanced computer courses. She learns how to hack into the police systems to keep track of demon infested areas. Craig and Alex both begin their karate training, training with Judo, Tae Kwon Doe and Tai Chi masters. They spar against each other, learn how to use swords, stakes and cross bows and other such skills to aid them in their fight. Craig begins to concentrate more on his magical arts, continually reading his Grandmothers book and him and Alex both involve themselves in the teachings of Eli.
Cut to Alex kicking the legs out from under a demon. She gets up swings the sword around and cuts off its head.
Cut to Craig. He runs up a tree flipping over the demon that was following him. He kicks the demon in the back ramming its head into the tree. Craig takes out the sword and cuts off its head.
Alex comes over swinging her sword around jumping over all the headless demons.
Alex - I could get used to this.
Craig - So two things we know. The best way to kill a demon is to snap it's neck or decapitate it and they are afraid of sunlight. We need to keep these things in mind
Alex - I'm never going to get a full night's sleep ever again am I?
Craig - It's all for a good cause though
Alex - I don't think I've ever seen you so happy
Craig - This is it Alex. This is our purpose, our chance. We can really help people. We can protect them by night and help them gain the ability to make better choices.
Alex - I like the demon ass kicking myself
Craig - Well don't focus on it. Remember Eli's teachings Alex and focus on the words of Ewan the Great. "The future is never that far off. Let us work to make every moment of it better."
Alex - Can we really do it? I mean how long can we keep this up? We're just two mortals Craig. Will we really make a difference or keep things status quo?
Craig - We are part of a limited number of people that stand between hell and the salvation of the world. But I have hope. And if we ever need help, we'll just look to the Messenger of Eli.
Craig brings out the book and opens it on a page where is grandmother has circled a spell and written the Eli symbol on it.
Fade from the book back to present times.
*End flashback*
Craig takes Leo to the Summers home.
Craig - Don't worry I already called. They're expecting you.
Leo - Your family is going to take me in?
Craig - They've done it before. They continue to help kids like you. Tonight you can sleep here, tomorrow they’ll help you get enrolled in another school. You can stay here as long as you need
Craig turns to leave
Leo – Hey! I never got your name!
Craig - (smiles a little) It's Craig but it’s not important
Leo - I think it is. You’re a good guy Craig. I think you’re the first real friend I’ve ever had, the first person who actually gave a damn. . . do you . . . do you have people like that in your life.
Craig – (nods) Yeah . . . yeah I do. Good people, good friends.
Craig smiles and walks off as Craig's parents open the door and smile warmly as they take Leo in.
Cut to an open park. Morgan, Jeff, James and Eve are battling demons. One demon punches Eve in the stomach then hits her on the back to make her go to her knees. Eve looks up just see the demon head being decapitated from its body. Pan over to Craig holding a broad sword.
Eve - Craig!
Craig then throws a sword right into the third eye of a cycloptic demon charging at James. Craig then whispers an incantation that jerks the two demons fighting Jeff and Morgan away from them and whispers another incantation that makes the demons burst into flames until they are nothing more then dust.
Eve - (looks over to Craig surprised and then give him a hug) You made it!
Craig – Well I couldn't let you guys have all the fun.
Eve – (lets out a snort of laughter) You sound like Alex
Morgan - (looks at him curiously) Are you okay? You seem different.
Craig – I helped a kid today
Eve – That’s good isn’t it?
Craig - It helped put a few things in perspective
Eve – Like?
Craig – I remembered when I was younger, hope seemed so infinite back then. These days I feel like I have none to spare. I thought I was just fighting cause that's all there is. I just remembered what I was fighting for.
Eve – Which is?
Craig – All of you . . . and Alex.
Eve – But don't be reckless, keep yourself safe as well. You do know that if you died Alex would never forgive you.
Craig – (laughs a little) You kidding me? She’d kick my ass!
Don’t close your eyes
Don’t close your eyes
This is your life, are you who you want to be
This is your life, are you who you want to be
This is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
When the world was younger and you had everything to lose
Eve and Craig follow the other out of the park as the sun rises to begin a new day.
