There are times in life when the soul finds comfort only in profound prayer. Would that souls knew how to persevere in prayer at such times. This is very important.       (860)

APRIL 21 - HEED THE CALL TO FASTING

In a weekly message in September of 1985 the Madonna said:

"Dear children, thank you for all your prayers. And thank you for all your sacrifices. I wish to tell you, dear children, to renew the messages which I am giving you.

Heed the call to fasting because by fasting you will ensure that the total plan of God here in Medjugorje will be fulfilled. This will give me great joy." (Weekly Message September 26, 1985).

And from Paul's letter to the Romans:

Those who observe the day, observe it in honor of the Lord. Also , those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and give thanks to God (Rom 14:6).

Reflection:

Today, let us consider one of the fruits of fasting, purification of the heart, in which we begin to perceive reality with new eyes.

We begin to see clearly all that we have, what we actually need, and what we do not need. A pure heart frees us from the compulsion of needing and wanting more and more, while being blind to what we already have.

Thus fasting changes our perception; we begin to see, for instance, that most material things are not really very important.

We are pilgrims only passing through this world in need of only a little. There are many who would be happy with only a roof over their heads and enough food for the day; if they were in our shoes they would be ecstatic. And yet, in our plenty, we are often discontented and unhappy.

The reason for the discontent lies in the fact that we do not see the essential anymore, we have become blind, convinced that what we have is inadequate.

Thus many Christians become nailed to this world and cannot move. This is why fasting is so important; its graces free us from the world's shackles and widens our horizon. We see with new eyes.

Application:

Have you begun to notice a change in your attitude toward your possessions? On your next fast day, pray for new eyes to truly see.

HOW PLEASED I AM THAT YOU RECEIVE THIS POPE WITH SUCH LOVE. HIS DELIGHT IN GOD IS EVIDENT, AND EVEN THOSE WHO ARE HARD HEARTED - HAVE BEEN TOUCHED. HE HAS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY OWN HEART AND HIS WORK IS DILIGENT.

MY CHILDREN, AS YOU MAKE OBSERVATIONS OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS, THERE IS SOME SADNESS, YET YOU DO NOT GROW IN ANGER BUT ACCEPT WHAT IS.

THIS IS HOW YOU MUST REACT TO THE WORLD. YOU CANNOT CHANGE IT, YET GOD HAS POWER OVER ALL THINGS AND SO WITH DILIGENT PRAYER THERE CAN BE AN OVERCOMING OF EVIL, AND THIS MY LOVES IS PART OF YOUR MISSION.
