“ A month?!” Billy knocked the book out of Alan’s hands. Alan stared at
him in shock. “ And when exactly were you planning on telling me?”
“ I just did,” Alan said quietly, looking away. He felt more than a
little guilty for having avoided telling Billy that he was going away.
Billy put his hands on his hips and glared at him, furious with his
lover. “ Only because Cheryl happened to mention it, and I asked!”
“ Don’t shout at me, Billy! I was going to tell you tonight,” Alan
snapped, he was confused by Billy’s overreaction. “ If you recall we’ve
been a little busy lately.”
“ Yeah, so busy, I hardly ever see you as it is!” Billy blinked back
sudden tears, unsure if they were from his anger, or of a fear that he
was losing Alan. Maybe both. Things had been so strained between them
recently. Most days, Alan was too busy on the site, or in town making
phone calls to see much of him. And most nights, he fell asleep before
they could make love, or even just talk.
“ We need funding!” Alan shouted.
“ Right, silly me, this fucking dig’s all you care about!” Billy turned
away, wrapping his arms protectively round his chest.
“ This dig is important!” Alan exclaimed. He stared at his lover in
confusion, Billy knew how hard it had been lately, with funds drying
up, losing students, with no new ones arriving to replace them.
Billy snorted. The dig, the dig, he was fucking sick of the dig. Just
once he wanted to come first with Alan. Selfish, maybe, but it was how
he felt. He didn’t want to be some little interlude in Alan’s life, the
young fool who had a thing for his hero, available whenever Alan wanted
him. When he wasn’t too busy that was.
“ But…” Alan started.
Billy couldn’t stand it any longer and shook his head. “ Hope your
fossils keep you warm at night!” he hissed.
Billy stormed out of the tent, ignoring the shocked looks of the other
students and volunteers as he ran to one of the jeeps, dashing tears
from his eyes.
Alan stared out of the tent blankly, heart in his mouth as he watched
the dust fly up behind the retreating jeep. He’d messed up somehow, but
he wasn’t entirely sure how.
