The Wilde man of the sea

By Stewart Knowles

MAN BEHIND the new comedy thriller series Wilde Alliance—the third episode, starring John Stride as the writer, is shown on Tuesday—began his own writing career on a guided-missile destroyer in the Far East.

Ian MacKintosh, a Lieutenant Commander when he left the Royal Navy in 1972, dreamed up the idea for Wilde Alliance, sold it to Yorkshire Television, wrote the first episode and become producer of the 13-part series.

The action is set in York because, says Inverness-born MacKintosh, it was the prettiest, most attractive town within easy reach of Yorkshire Television’s Leeds studio.  He has written 10 novels and this is the first time he has used a location of which he has no first-hand knowledge.
