Fyridare: Story

Would you care to stand at a Hatching? Baeris asked through Dulath. Although Fyridare was becoming adept at reading lips, and his blue flit, Hanashimazu helped was very intelligen for a firelizard, having Dulath speak to him was much easier. Really, he had quite a gift for speaking to dragons, Baeris reflected. Some would not have wanted to listen.

Could I? Even in mind-speak to Dulath, Fyridare sounded ecstatic. But then his face fell. They wouldn't want a dragonrider who couldn't hear. I wouln't be any use to them.

I think you would. Dulath told him, speaking for herself, Baeris noted. You speak very well to me, and you aren't even a rider. All that matters is that you hear your dragon. And your mind is not deaf.

"It would help you, too," Baeris told him, speaking aloud to enforce her point. "A dragon would help you hear, even more than Hanashimazu does."

"If you think they would want me..." Fyridare still sounded skeptical.

I know a Weyr that would, Dulath interjected. At Ryslen, there is a clutch of a green dragon, flown by a white. I think it will hold a special dragon for you."

"I hope you're right. But, If you think I'd be acceptable, then I would love to go." Hanashimazu chirped agreement.

Baeris grinned. "One way to find out. Dulath, would you, please?"

Certainly. Then, a moment later, Okserth comes.

When Fyridare stood in the courtyard several minutes later, Okserth and D'run also agreed.

You would be a good rider. You speak - and listen - better than most people with hearing. Okserth told him.

"Impression would help you, Fyridare," D'run affirmed. "And if Okserth wants you on the Sands, I won't argue."

Fyridare grinned, for the first time in Turns. "Then it will be my duty and very great pleasure to do as Okserth says!"
