The Hijackers !!!!!
8:45 a.m. ET
A hijacked American Airlines commercial jetliner - Flight 11, which left Boston en route to Los Angeles with 92 people aboard - slams into the 110-story north tower of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan.
*9:03 a.m.
A second hijacked plane - United Airlines Flight 175, which was seized while carrying 65 people from Boston to Los Angeles - screeches across the New York sky and explodes into the side of the second World Trade Center tower.
*9:43 a.m.
Another hijacked commercial jetliner, American Airlines Flight 77 carrying 64 people, crashes into the Pentagon in Washington, collapsing part of one of the building's five sides.
*9:50 a.m.
Two Trade Center tower - the second building hit in New York - collapses, about an hour after being hit by the plane. Casualties are reported extremely high - possibly in the thousands - but figures are not known.
*10:10 a.m
A fourd hijacked jetliner - United Flight 93 from Newark, N.J., headed for San Francisco with 45 people - crashes in western Pennsylvania, about 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
*10:28 a.m
Second tower - One World Trade Center - collapses in New York. The city's famed skyline is forever altered.
*10:38 a.m.
A fourth explosion rocks the collapsed remains of the World Trade Center. Broken gas lines are suspected.
*5:25 p.m.
Eight hours after the morning crashes, fire was raging at adjoining 7 World Trade Center, eventually causing its collapse. The evacuated building was damaged when the tower above it collapsed

10:30 - 11 a.m.
Government buildings around the United States are evacuated, including the Capitol and the White House. The Federal Aviation Administration shuts down airports nationwide. The United Nations closes. The Securities and Exchange Commission halts all U.S. trading on financial markets for the day
Evening
Rescue workers pull civilian survivors as well as police and firefighters from the rubble.
Several buried victims alert rescuers by cell phone, while some trapped police officers fire their guns to attract attention.

Afternoon
NATO's governing council declares that if the attacks were directed from abroad, they would be considered an attack against all 19 NATO member nations. Although the council resolution gives no explicit authority for an armed attack, international law provides for military intervention to combat threats to "international peace and security."
Evening
Arab Americans and Muslims are attacked, threatened and harassed across the nation in a backlash over the terrorist blood bath, prompting President Bush to urge people not to take vengeance.
Sept. 13, 2001
Morning
The president and first lady Laura Bush go to the Washington Hospital Center where they see 11 military and civilian workers from the Pentagon. Nine are in critical condition. Most have burns and some are on ventilators.
Resceu crews continue to dig through smoking ruins and body parts, hunting for signs of life in the rubble of the World Trade Center.
Ninety-four people are confirmed dead. New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani says that 4,763 people had been reported missing, and that the city has 30,000 body bags available.
At the Pentagon, the last of the fires is extinguished and rescuers continue the search for more survivors in the rubble. In the first official estimate, a senior defense official (speaking on condition of anonymity) says about 190 people died in the attack, a preliminary figure which includes the passengers aboard the airliner that slammed into the building. Some employees return to work.
Afternoon
Rescuers save two firefighters from the World Trade Center rubble. The two had fallen into a crevice in the wreckage while working as rescuers themselves.
Searchers find the black box of the crashed hijacked airliners in Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon. Initial reports suggest that the black box from the Pentagon crash is blank.
Sept. 14, 2001
Morning
Some New Jersey firefighters on motorboats enter a flooded commuter rail tunnel that connects with the World Trade Center. They're trying to find out if there are any survivors by the World Trade Center platform.
New York's three major airports reopen. They had closed Thursday night as about a dozen people of Middle Eastern descent were detained. The FBI says those people have been cleared of any connection with the attacks. Major airports begin to open across the country on limited schedules. The FAA says Boston's Logan International - where terrorists boarded two jets hijacked Tuesday - won't reopen until stricter safety measures are in place.
Noon
At the National Cathedral, President Bush leads four former presidents - Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton - and the nation in prayer during a nationally televised prayer service. The Rev. Billy Graham also participates in the service. All over the country, similar services are held to commemorate a National Day Of Remembrance.
*Afternoon and Evening
FBI identifies 18 as hijackers. Secretary of State Colin Powell Powell says bin Laden remains prime suspect. President tours Twin Towers site in New York and rallies rescue workers. NFL calls off weekend games; college football also canceled. Lawmakers unite to give president full power - and money- to fight terrorism.

Afghanistan threatens Pakistan and others with invasion if West is allowed to use their airspace or military. Continental Airlines says it will lay off 12,000 workers. Bush warns of long war. Funerals held for first of the New York victims.
Sept. 16, 2001
Attack victims remembered in church services across the country. Vice President Dick Cheney leads the call for American investors to show patriotism and buy stocks when markets reopen Monday. Pakistan sends delegation to meet with Taliban on handover of
bin Laden.
Sept. 17, 2001
Taliban discusses conditions for possibly extraditing bin Laden to a country other than U.S. Markets open. Dow loses 684.81 points to close below 9,00. Nasdaq falls more than 115 to 1,579.55. Family of victims of United Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, hold memorial service attended by first lady Laura Bush. U.S. Airways says it will lay off 11,000 workers and cut flight capacity.

Attorney General John Ashcroft says FBI is following 47,000 leads, has detained 49 people for questioning and was looking for 200 others. President visits the Washington Islamic Center and decries recent acts of violence and prejudice against Muslims and Arab Americans. Major League baseball resumes.
*Sept. 18, 2001
President leads nation in moment of silence to mark one-week anniversary of attacks. Japanese and German officials investigate whether bin Laden tried to make a profit on the attacks. After Pakistani delegation leaves, Taliban says it needs proof bin Laden is to blame. Executives of major airlines meet with federal officials to discuss possible government bailout and takeover of insurance liability on attack claims.
