Anubis

Anubis is shown in the form of a jackal headed man, or simply as a jackal. Along with the god Thoth, Anubis weighs the heart of each dead soul against a feather (the symbol of truth).

The dead soul is required to answer against charges of various crimes and, if he lies, his heart will sink on the scales.

Anubis is also responsible for the evisceration of the dead body, having helped Isis to embalm Osiris.

Jackals are grave robbers and the principle is that 'like can defeat like', so Anubis is the protector of the dead.

His father was Osiris and his mother Nephythys.
