This method of
divination relies on the observance of atmospheric phenomena such
as winds and their direction, cloud formations, rainbows, storms
and thunder and lightening and their effects. To some extent this
method of divination may well have been the first step towards
the development of the science of meteorology.
You may at some time or other found yourself looking up at the
clouds and noticing that they had formed a shape which resembled
something recognisable such as animals or people etc. In times
gone by our ancestors gave these experiences meanings and saw
them as omens.
A change in the direction of the wind was also given portentous
significance other than the knowledge that it would usually
preclude a change in the weather, and a particularly hot or cold
weather spell would also bring it's own omens.
A North wind was generally believed to be a bad omen as many
people believed that they were sent by demons.
There are four specific forms of divination which are related
specifically to the element of Air...
Austraumancy: is named from the Latin 'auster' which means 'south
wind'.
Ceraunoscopy: is based on the observation of thunder and
lightning.
Chaomancy: involves the observance of rainbows and cloud
formations
Meteromancy: involves interpreting the omens related to shooting
stars.
