Building with Mud
At Tapovan we are experimenting with the age-old
method of
building with mud, specifically with the method known as cob. Cob involves using
a combination of mud, straw and sand, and moulding the shape of building that
you want from the ground up. One can build-in all the furniture and add
cantilevered shelves and benches, beds and alcoves as one goes.
It is a
great, creative and exciting way to build cheap and energy efficient housing.
We are providing an opportunity to anyone visiting Tapovan to participate in a
hands-on learning situation in building with cob.
On the drawing board is a plan to build several
geodesic domes here. We have been inspired after visiting two different
communities which have already constructed several do
mes in various sizes which
are suitable for accommodation. These come in kit form and we hope to start our
first prototype in a month or two.
Also, it will be possible to learn to make a small mud oven and a few days
later cook home-made bread in the oven, or cook a meal on the top. All
this for the price of a few bricks and a little bit of mud.
