Wednesday 18.7.01 Somehow the fact that the whole Angelfire server crashed yesterday means that varying amounts of my links and so forth are, well, buggered. I am working to fix them, but it may take a little time. In the meanwhile, if you discover a broken/missing link, please mail me so I can get this place back to normal asap... Thanks. Oh yeah, and I know I always get the date wrong, both in my archives and on this page. Yeah, well, I gave up maths years ago, and I'm a language student. I'm allowed not to be able to count... Thursday 19.7.01 Owing to my continuing failure to find work, I have taken it upon myself to get through as many of the books on my reading list as possible. Actually, no. That's not true. I've just been and bought the books, and realising there is no way I'll get through them, have decided to start and see where I get. So in a way, not having a job isn't so bad - means I can read all day. Doesn't mean I am, of course... Still having a few techincal problems - bloody Angelfire - but will have everything back to normal asap, promise... Friday 20.7.01 Shit, shit, shit. Just remembered that I still haven't sent in my form to get a student loan next year. Or, to be more precise (ie to heap the blame on someone else,) my dad still has it. I hope. Looks like I'm going to be poor next year... Saturday 21.7.01 I love Montaigne. The random git locked himself in a tower for a few decades to write rants about every subject imaginable. This puts him, surely, in the category that so many Frenchies so conveniently fall: insane, but not stupid. I mean, look at Napoleon, de Gaulle, even bloody Charlemagne. All nutters. All wonderful. I love my subject. Sunday 22.7.01 I love the way G8 summits are described: 'A meeting of the heads of state of the world's most powerful/richest/whatever 8 nations... and Russia.' That's classic. But there is more to say about these cosy power-chats; the reason why, surely, there are so many anarchists, ahem, protestors, at these things, is that they are made so public. And let's face it, most of the people rioting on the streets of Genoa couldn't actually give a shit about capitalism, nor can they spell globalisation. They're there for the fight. So why don't these leaders spend a little less money on their fun get-togethers and meet somewhere a little less..public, for goodness sake? I, for one, am reasonably certain that if the protestors had to scale, say, the north face of the Eiger to strut their stuff, there'd be about three of them there. What ever happened to meeting in secret? Monday 23.7.01 Still reeling from Saturday's attempt to cook: my mashed potatoes came out with a texture not unlike balsa wood: sort of crispy-crunchy, almost brittle, really. Not wonderfully done, then. The rest went alright (Some sort of Kiev a la Tesco - even I can just about follow the instructions on the packet...) I am, however, much cheered by this: just found out that George Bush claims to be bilingual (apparently he speaks Spanish.) Snort. Now, I know I'm straying into perilously hypocritical territory here (given that only the other week I proclaimed that 'arse-numbingly' was an adjective) but doesn't the quiet fact that he can't even speak English properly sort-of put the damper on his assertion? Or perhaps I'm just misunderestimating him. Transatlantic fool. Tuesday 24.7.01 Yippee! I'm not the only complete cihld out there, as proved by Michelle's love of the muppets. And I thought I was the only one who found them funny.... Anyway, news reaches me today that Ann Widdecombe has gone on holiday to see all the other bears in the world, specifically to the arctic circle somewhere. Don't get me wrong, I'm probably her biggest fan - at least she bloody stands for something. But believe you me, if I had to choose between a confrontation between her and Tony Blair, I know which I'd be opting for every time... |
