Alanna
Basic Appearance: red hair, purple eyes
Magic: The Gift
Personality: outgoing, quick temper, rational, won’t let anything get in her way
Story:
Alanna decides at a young age that she wants to become a Knight. Since women at this time were not allowed to do this, she disguises herself as a boy, trades places with her
brother, and goes into training at the age of 10.
In her travels, she meets and loves three
men. First, Prince Jonathan (who becomes King at a very early age). Then, George (“King
of Thieves, Master of the Court of the Rogue”). And Lastly, Liam Ironarm (the Shang
Dragon). She also befriends Thayet and brings her to Tortall.
Song Of The Lioness
Alanna - The First Adventure
Review: Alanna's story begins here (and so does our window into Tortall). An amazing girl with red hair and purple eyes decides to become a knight, and to do so disguises herself as a boy. This book gives readers a first glimpse into the world of Tortall and it's people.
Great beginning to an extraordinary series.
In The Hand Of The Goddess
Review: In this book, Alanna works her way from Squire to Knight while discovering womanhood, preparing for the Chamber of Ordeals (the final test to become a Knight), and uncovering the evil plots of Duke Roger. The Goddess greets her and gives her a charm and a purple-eyed black cat named Faithful to look out for her.
Wonderful work, sure to keep readers in suspence and good humor.
The Woman Who Rides Like A Man
Review: Here, Alanna is a knight and no longer disguised as a boy. This book gives detail on her life with a Bazhir tribe, of which she becomes the first female shaman. She must work to get the tribe to trust a couple of gifted youths who have previously been shunned, for they are the only ones who can take her place as shaman.
Alanna spends a lot of time with George in this book, and a relationship blossoms between them.
Alanna serves a wonderful heroin for children of the realm (as well as readers) to look up to. She's practical and disciplined in the way she uses her gift and lives her life.
Lioness Rampant
Review: This is where we meet Thayet, the girl who will become Queen of Tortall. If you started with the first series, the event might not be so significant to you. But if, like me, you read the Immortals quartet first, you've probably spent this whole set wondering "where's Thayet?"
I'm don't want to give away much else about this last book. But it was the most exciting conclusion to a series I've ever read. I had to keep forcing myself to take breaks and put it down occasionally because I wanted it to last.
Sorry there's no real info here, but you've just got to read it.
