Clovermead - In The Shadow of the Bear - by David Randall

Clovermead, the innkeepers daughter, grows up hearing tales brought by travelers of knights and magic, heroes and beasts. So, when she notices the strangest pilgram she has ever seen (Sorrel) and finds a sword in his room, she jumps at the oppurtunity to learn sword-fighting from him. After a day of training, Clovermead discovers that her teacher is being stalked by a mysterious white bear and that she knows the name of the bear before she can ask.

One morning after exercises, Clovermead and Sorrel meet a nun from the Temple traveling south on a mission from the Lady. Sister Rowan sees a vision in a puddle and tells Sorrel he must hurry North, then tells Covermead that something of hers is hidden in a nearby tree. After searching every tree and bush, Clovermead finally uncovers a brooch that causes her to begin discovering secrets from the past which connect Clovermead with the frightening Lord Ursus through her father's mysterious past.

Chandlefort, Clovermead's new home, is attacked by an ally of the dreaded Lord Ursus, one who happens to be an enemy of her mother. To save her mother from the fatal effects of a poisoned would, Clovermead, Sorrel, and Saraband (a sweet young woman who annoys the heck out of Clovermead) set out to search for the antidote.

Along the way Clovermead struggles to discover her true nature and find harmony among all of the thoughts and feelings battling within her. Ultimately, she must put herself to the test by making decisions that will effect the lives of those around her, decisions that will force her to risk her own happiness and possibly even her life.

As the hordes and cities are joining together against Lord Ursus, Clovermead faces more difficult decisions and challenges than ever before.

While on a mission to speak with White Star Horde, Clovermead and Sorrel's party encounters two rather significant escaped slaves from the Barley Mill and learn that there are more members of Cyan Cross Horde enslaved by Lord Ursus. There they are forced to mine the dangerous quicksilver, used to create Lord Ursus's deadliest weapon yet.

As Clovermead deals with her growing feelings for Sorrel and the tough choices she has to make as Demoiselle, she also must prepare for battle.
