Creel's aunt asks her to sacrifice herself to the local dragon as part of a plan to get a rich suitor to come along and rescue and marry her, bringing wealth to the family. Creel plays along, figuring this would be a good time to set out on her own, hoping to avoid the dragon entirely.

But, as luck would have it, the dragon discovers Creel and brings her inside to study her. When she is told she may choose a pair of shoes from his horde, she finds the best fit in a soft blue leathery pair. This quite obviously upsets the dragon, but he won't explain to her why.

As Creel ventures to the city to try and make a life for herself, the mystery of the shoes follows her. She ends up making a new friend in a Dragon named Feniul, who collects dogs, and new human friends in the cloth shop where she finds work.

But the rules of the city are a little strange to adjust to, and a royal plot is making its way into Creel's newly complicated life.

When Creel gets word that a nearby kingdom is planning to attack with dragon riding soldiers, she knows she must stop the battle at all costs, for the lives of everyone she loves are in danger.

She travels with her friends, human and dragon alike, on a spy mission to find out why her kingdom is a target and how so many dragons came to be involved.
