Kaeldra must overcome her fears and find the dragon cave to save her sister Lyf. Lyf has the fever that can only be cured by dragon's milk, and Kaeldra has to agree to babysit the dracling's while their mother hunts in order to bring back the milk. After a few trips, she's gotten enough milk to save Lyf, but the villagers have noticed the mother dragon and now there is a hunting party.
Soon, Kaeldra finds herself on a journey she's not sure if she's cut out for - taking the baby dragons to the original place where their kind left the earth before anyone can kill or steal them. The path is difficult, and Kaeldra never knows who to trust, expecially when it comes to Jeorg, a young man who may or may not intened to slay the draclings.
Her journey takes her across land and sea while she discovers more about the people of her world and more about who she is.

Though afraid of what might happen, Kara goes along on a mission to help rid the kingdom of dragons so that the people won't go hungry from loss of livestock and no more men will be killed trying to fight them. Kara is unsure of her gift, but hopes she can become a hero to her people.
Only too late does she remember being saved by a dragon in early childhood. When the very dragon that saved her is killed as a result of her first calling attempt, Kara realizes the evils of what she's being made to do.
This is the story of Kara, who Kaeldra descended from, the girl who would find a way to help both the people of her kingdom and the dragons of her world so they might stop killing eachother.

Ever since the illness that she was saved from by dragon's milk as a baby, Lyf is seen treated as weaker and more immature than other girls. She is afraid when no-one is around to take care of her, but soon finds strength in taking care of others. As she continues her journey, she realizes that maybe she isn't as helpless as she's been lead to believe.
