The Goblin Wood by Hilari Bell

Makenna loses her home and her mother in the same day, as it's the cruel villagers who kill her mother for practicing witchcraft, even though they were the ones benefiting from her magic (of course).

Makenna makes a new life for herself in the woods, away from the humans, making allies of the goblins who reside there. She joins them in helping to free those goblins that get trapped by humans and sometimes taking revenge on the humans who harm them.

Tobin a young man who has become an outcast by defending his younger brother, is asked to help rid the forest of these "threats". The kingdom has enough to worry about, with upcoming battles at hand, and they have no room to deal with troubles in their own forests.

When these two main characters come into contact with one another, the danger to both of them becomes greater. They have the potential to destroy each other in there attempts to not fail those who expecting their aid, and there might not be a way for them not to.
