Book 1: The Shifter Nya's peculiar version of healing talents have kept her out of the healing league (since she's unable to complete the healing process in the standard fashion, by emptying the pain into an element called pynvium) and are a danger to her if discovered (since she can empty pain into other people, which no-one's supposed to be able to do). Orphaned by war, Nya lives day to day, earning money wherever she can to feed and shelter herself, and venturing to the league to visit her younger sister Tali (a healing apprentice), when she's able. When an attempt to steal some eggs for breakfast gets out of control, Nya accidently reveals her talent, beginning a series of events that keeps getting more and more complicated, forcing Nya to make many difficult decisions about how and why she'll use her power. As if that weren't enough trouble, apprentices have begun disappearing from the league. The last time there were so many disappearances was during the war that orphaned Nya and Tali and destroyed the lives of so many in Geveg. Nya just wants to stay safe and hidden. She doesn't seek adventure, but adventure and trouble find her soon enough, and, as the dangers increase, Nya must find increasing amounts of courage within herself to fight them. |
