The Books of Great Alta - by Jane Yolen

Name: Jenna

Appearance: tall with white hair and dark eyes

Magic: ability of her people to call their shadow sisters

This duet is followed by a book called The One Armed Queen about Jenna's adopted daughter.

Book 1: Sister Light, Sister Dark

Jenna is raised in a society of warrior women and discovers that she might be the girl born to fullfill a prophecy to bring about the end and the beginning. In this book, she begins her journey to find answers to questions of who she is and how the prophecy can be fullfilled. She travels with her best friend Pynt, meets a young man named Carum who will turn out to be a part of her destiny, and learns to call her Dark Sister, Skada (the name shadow, and the dark sisters only appear in the moonlight).
There are breaks in the story for references to history and myth, explaining both how and how not the story could be true.

Book 2: White Jenna

This book continues to tell the story as the first one began, with the interuptions between chapters, but they get less distracting the further you read.
Jenna has been wandering from Hame to Hame, trying to warn her people of the gender wars that are coming, but she keeps finding herself there too late. But she and her companions soon find that the prophecy is meant to be fullfilled in another way, when they are lead into the land of the Goddess.
This book is quite grim at times, but it has more of a magical feel than the first one. Readers are also given a view of Jenna's gentler side when her love for Carum is reaveled and she decides to adopt an orphaned baby.
