Sirena - by Donna Jo Napoli

In Sirena's world, mermaids are the sirens who sing sailors to their deaths. They sing because once a man loves them, they will become immortal. When Sirena and her sisters realize that men cannot swim very well nor survive on an island without fresh water, she leaves her school (10 mermaid sisters to a school) and sets out alone, determined to live alone rather than cause more men to die.

She decides to live on the island of Lemnos, not knowing that men sometimes stop there for water. One day an injured man is left behind for having been bitten by the serpent of Hera. Sirena decides to care for him, and soon they love each other, causing Sirena's immortality. But what is being immortal when the one you love is not?

This is a awesome book for people interested in mermaids and mythology, with many references to Greek myths and gods nicely woven into the story to create a marvelous landscape.
