Six

Scene 1 The Staircase of the
Opera House, New Year's Eve

The
Phantom walks down the Grand Staircase in
the red death mask, scattering the
guests. Christine stands paralysed by his
approach. the Phantom and Christine meet.
He pulls off the secret engagement chain
given to her by Raoul - 'Your chains are
still mine..' he tells her.

Scene 2
Backstage
A meeting between Raoul and
Mme. Giry. She tells him what she knows of the
Phantom.
That she had seen him in a
travelling fair in the city. locked in a cage...
a prodigy, scholar, architect, musician, and an
inventor too. They boasted he had once built for
the Shah of Persia, a maze of mirrors. She tells
him that the Phantom was born a freak of nature,
deformed from birth. Then one night he went
missing, he escaped. He was never found, they
belived him dead. In telling Raoul this, he
presumes that the man she is speaking is the one
and the same, The Phantom of the Opera. She then
turns from him and leaves quickly in fear.
Scene 3 The Managers' Office
|
More letters are
received from The Phantom along with the
score 'Don Juan Triumphant', with further
instructions.
A plot is laid in which
Christine is asked to be the bait for the
trap. She initially refuses, but Raoul
convinces her otherwise.

Scene 4
Rehearsal for 'Don Juan Triumphant'
Present at the
rehearsal is Piangi, Christine, Carlotta,
Giry and chorus. During the rehearsal,
the piano suddenly begins to play
unaided. It plays with great force and
rhythm. All fall silent and freeze.

Scene 5 The
Graveyard in Perros
|
|
Christine goes to her
fathers grave and sings to him. The
Phantom emerges from behind the mausoleum
and very softly and enticingly he sings
to her, luring her to him. Meanwhile
Raoul who has followed Christine there
watches for a moment, transfixed by what
he sees. He calls out to her and breaks
her from her trance, She runs towards
Raoul, angered The Phantom strikes back
at Raoul with a fire streak from his
staff.

Scene 6 Before
the Premiere
Raoul and the Managers discuss
their laid out plans for capturing The Phantom.
But, The Phantom already knows of their plans and
mocks them.
Scene 7 'Don Juan Triumphant'

Christine in the
opening scene from 'Don Juan'.
The Phantom and
Christine, he sings 'Past the Point Of No
Return..' Christine listens, horrified at
the intensity of his words.

Scene 8 The
Labyrinth Underground
|
After
Christine unmasks The Phantom before the
public onstage, he grabs her and takes
her back to his Underground Lair. He
tells her
'Down once more to the
dungeon of my black despair. Down we
plunge to the prison of my mind. Down
that path into darkness deep as hell.
Why, you ask, was I
bound and chained in this cold and dismal
place?
Not for any mortal sin,
but the wickedness of my abhorrent face.
Hounded out by
everyone. Met with hatred everywhere. No
kind word from anyone. No compassion
anywhere.
Christine,
Christine...Why, Why...?

Scene 9 Beyond
the Lake
|
|
The Phantom, unmasked,
in his lair with Christine dressed as his
bride...Face your fate; an eternity of
this before your eyes. Raoul has followed
them below and becomes ensnared by The
Phantom's lasso. The Phantom gives her a
choice marry him and save Raoul, or deny
him and send her lover to his death.
Christine replies 'Pitiful creature of
darkness..What kind of life have you
known..? God give me courage to show you,
You are not alone..' Calmly facing him,
she kisses him long and full on the lips.
Raoul watches in horror and wonder. The
Phantom takes a lighted candle and holds
it above Raoul's head. The suspended rope
falls harmlessly, resigned, he addresses
Raoul, take her, forget me, forget all of
this...

Go Now and
Leave Me!
Midi 'Music of the Night'
Raoul and Christine move off
towards the boat. The Phantom looks mockingly at
his mask. The musical box starts up magically,
and he listens to it. 'Masquerade..paper faces on
parade..Masquerade..hide your face, so the world
will never find you..'
Christine re-enters and walks
slowly towards him. She takes off her ring and
gives it to The Phantom. He tells her '
Christine, I Love You...'
she hurries off. The Phantom
puts the ring on his finger. Looking after her,
'You alone can make my song take flight-its over
now, The Music of the Night....
The Phantom walks slowly
towards the throne. He takes his place on it,
sitting on his cloak. The mob including Meg,
appears above, climbing down the protcullis. As
the mob enters the Lair, The Phantom wraps his
cloak around himself and disappears.
Meg crosses to the throne and
picks up his mask in her small hand.
