Marseilles 1767

Darla sat in front of the vanity and took off her black-feathered hat. She reached for the bottle of vodka and took a sip. Angelus stepped through the door, his hair amuck and soot on his face.

After a moment Darla turned to him but did not look at him.

“Where have you been? James has been back for hours. Did you lead Holtz on a wild goose chase?”

“Something of the sort,” he said, smoothing out his shirt. He rubbed at the dirt stain and sighed.

Darla’s slender fingers undid the pins holding her blonde curls up. She stood up and looked at her boy.

“Such a mess,” she said, barely holding back her disgust at the sight of him. “I hope you plan on bathing before you think of touching me.”

Angelus smirked at her and gathered her small body up in his arms. She gasped and slapped at him, pretending to be angry.

“Don’t be a swine, Angelus. I’m very cross with you!”

“What did I do?” He set her down and she shoved him hard, causing him to lose his balance slightly.

“James told me of your willingness to turn Elizabeth and me into Holtz.”

“Ay, but he didn’t get you did he? Tell me, luv, why does Holtz never manage to catch you?”

Darla smiled and began to undo her corset. “Because he simply can’t. You on the other hand aren’t that bright so he always manages to catch you like a cat.”

“He wants you badly,” Angelus said. “I think I should be jealous.”

Darla twirled the satin lace of her cream-colored corset around her finger, her fair hair falling gently past her petite shoulders.

She smiled with a tiny shrug. “He’ll never catch me. I promise you that.”

Angelus smiled and attempted to kiss her cheek, but she stepped aside, giving him only the jasmine scent of her skin.

“You used to love me the way James loves Elizabeth, you know. Why have you stopped?”

“Stopped?” asked Angelus, sitting at the foot of the bed.

Darla stood by the window, watching him carefully from the corner of her violet-hazel eyes. Then she looked out at the street lamps below.

“You never bring me gifts, anymore.”

“I brought you that sailor the other night.”

“I mean trinkets and such. Anything would charm me - hats, gloves, earrings, you know how I so do adore hats.”

“I thought you were too good for trinkets, my darling.”

“Maybe I miss them.

“Have we grown so apart, Angelus?”

“Darla, you know you are my sun. Your kisses burn me with desire for you.”

“Do they now?” Darla said, arching an eyebrow.

Angelus approached her, standing close by her side, his lips near her cheek. His lips brushed against the beauty mark beneath her left eye. With one hand he reached down under her dark rose-colored skirts and began to pull them up. When she felt his hand between her thighs she pushed him away; he fell to the floor.

“You’re warm,” he said, his dark eyes glistening.

“I fed with Elizabeth.”

“You’re going to make me beg you this evening, aren’t you?”

“Of course. I so do like it when you’re on your knees.”

“Darla, I haven’t stopped loving you. Have you of me?”

“Don’t be silly. I don’t think I could ever stop loving you.”

Darla slid off her pink silk heels and walked to the bed. He watched the tiny steps her small stockinged feet took.

Sitting at the foot of the bed she began to raise her skirts.

“Come and dine on mother’s milk.”

He got down on all fours and crawled to her. Gliding his hands over her finely sculpted calves and knees he undid the satin bows and pulled her stockings from her legs. She tilted her head to the side as Angelus kissed the soft soles of her dainty feet and suckled on her toes.

Then he grabbed her hips and buried his face between her porcelain thighs. Darla smiled, looking down at him adoringly. Her fingers trickled lightly through his dark hair; then she pulled at his hair and closed her eyes. The peach rouge on her cheeks made her look healthily flushed, like a china doll.

Darla squeaked faintly as she opened her eyes, watching her boy where she liked him most to be.

She said, “My darling boy . . .”
