This summer trip had been in the planning stages since early April and although some things didn't go as expected, I can still say a good time was had by all.OZZFEST, the all-day musical extravaganza that featured 21 bands and accumulated with rock and roll legend Ozzy Osbourne, was held at Verizon Wireless Ampitheater on Aug. 13th. Which happened to be my son Kyle's birthday, and coincidentally the day ebfore school started.
Kyle and friends, Nick and Shane, had grown steadily more excited over the summer and the fact that they would be tired for the first day of school didn't seem to bother them. Circumstances beyond our control made ti impossible for Shane to go along. (Something that we will need to remidy next year.) In Shane's absence, and since we were driving the van, we three--Kyle, Nick, and I, became a party of six as Big Mike, Brown, and Jarvis joined us. Today's youth definately has a look and attitude of their own. But they are as passionate in their ideals and about their music as any I have ever seen. As I dyed and braided their hair and inspected the black nail polish freshly applied, I foolishly thought these things would make them stand out in the crowd. Boy, was I ever wrong. Leaving in the middle of the night (because I was the solo driver, wanted to avoid Indianapolis traffic), we were the fourth vehicle in line for OZZFEST. That, combined with the fact that I had photo pass to film their favorite bands, made me the mom to be reckoned with. Kyle, Big Mike, and I were the veterans of our group having been at OZZFEST last year.I laughed out loud as Big Mike whipped out the sunscreen and began lathering up. (Last year after promising his father I would take care of him, Big Mike returneed looking like a lobster.) Big Mike learned his lesson. We veterans had pre-warned our group to drink plenty of water and eat enough food to last them through the day, because only multimillionaires could handle the prices once inside.
The management at Verizon must have recieved notice from parents ticked off at last year's $5 price tag on bottled water, because this year, a huge water tanked sat next to second stage and fill-ups were free. Let me tell you the trough was full. This new generation dresses in black on black, no matter how many times they were told tha white reflects the sun and they were hot. Twenty-one bands appeared on stage at OZZFEST, moving in and out in 20-minute sets. So I was kept busy snapping photos of bands like Neurotica, Switched, Glassjaw, OTEP, Lost Prophets, Hatebreed, and my entourage's favorites--Down, Black Label Society, and Rob Zombie--while the boys kept themselves entertained listening to the music and gettin autographs from band members exiting the stage. Pictures of headliner Ozzy Osbourne were not permitted, as only one photographer, Lori, got to snap photos of the Ozzman. Maybe Lori was the mom to be reckoned with, I don't know. But there is always next year, Lori, so look out, I will be there with my crew again.
As I pulled into the driveway and tried to wake my sleeping crew up 27 hours into our adventure, it was obvious that no matter what, boy will be boys.
Hair dyes and painted nails aside, they slept like babies, big, old, snoring babies surrounded by pop-tarts, cookie crisp cereal, and memories of a great day.
