Every Day a Sunday!

Joel Osteen’s latest book, Every Day a Friday, is now available and from what I’ve read, it’s more of the materialistic desires that his books always talk about. For those who don’t know who Mr. Osteen is, he’s a preacher of a megachurch called the Lakewood Church located in Houston, Texas. Formerly an arena for basketball, it has been transformed into a 25,000 or more seat auditorium style church complete with several daycare centers, coffee shops and gift shops for all your personal needs.
The basis of his books is to have a ‘Friday attitude” every day of the week. More people are happier on Fridays as they choose to be this way because it is the last day of the workweek and they look forward to the weekend. They are more depressed on Mondays as it is the start of the new workweek and feel stressed out. Overall I agree, because it is the mindset of an individual that shows how we treat each day and each other.
But why Friday? Why not Every Day A Sunday? Surely being a preacher he’d want to encourage readers to have a more spiritual minded attitude on a daily basis wouldn’t he. The answer is that he doesn’t want to lose his readers. All too often people look forward to Friday for the weekend’s sake rather than Sunday where they have to put on their Christianity for a few hours in the morning and be glad when services are finally over.
As our Fall Gospel meeting begins there will be the usual large attendance on Sunday Morning and by Monday night it will only be the “die hard faithfuls” that will arrive for the remaining nights of the week. Why is that? Well for some going to worship every night is unthinkable even if you quote Heb. 10: 24-25, it’s not enough. They might show up for Wednesday night but since it’s not bible study and “yet another sermon!” they will most likely forgo that as well.
Now come the Day of Judgment, and should they find themselves admitted into Heaven, they may be disappointed to learn that eternity will be spent worshipping God at the foot of His throne. If you think a week of worship is bad, what about an eternity of worship?
If you can’t find a good reason not to attend services
more than once a week, besides stating, “it’s not found in the bible”, then
perhaps your heart is not right with God.
Heb. 10: 25 says that as often as the assembly gathers for worship you
should make it a point to attend. It’s
pretty simple if you ask me and I don’t understand why more people can’t see
that. The apostle John wrote in 1 Jn.
2: 15-17, “Love not the world, neither the things
that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not
in him. For all that is in the world,
the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vain glory of life, is
not of the Father, but is of the world.
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the
will of God abideth for ever.” If your excuse for not attending more often
doesn’t have anything to do with work, illness, or out of town, then perhaps
you are putting too much emphasis on worldly things.
If our admittance into Heaven
were based solely on our worship attendance, then a lot of people would be left
out. Make everyday a Sunday and do all
that you can for the Kingdom of God!
