ODEDIENCE TO THE FAITH (OVERVIEW OF ROMANS)

 

INTRO:  1.  Letter written to correct the attitude of the Jewish Christians trying to impose Judaism on the   Gentile Christians and that they were not as good as the Jews.

                        Ex.  Acts 15 & Book of Galatians

     2.  Jews generally were the leaders of the Church because they had a better knowledge of God.

     3.  Letter is mostly directed to the Jewish Christians

 

I.  CALLED TO BE FAITHFUL OF CHRIST

       A.  Paul called to be an Apostle (In Greek means an messenger spent forth with orders) vs. 1

            1.  To Whom?  ALL Nations vs. 5

             2.  Why?  Obedience to the faith vs..5

      B.  Of What - Called of Christ vs. 6

      C.  Addressed to Whom?  All called to be Saints

                   1.  Obedient to the Faith vs. 7

      D.  Paul called to Preach the Gospel vs. 15

                 Why?  because it is the Power of God to Save vs. 16

 

II.  ALL UNDER SIN (All Need to be obedient & Conform)

      A.  Jew & Gentile All both Equally Guilty of Sin CH 1-3

           1.  Both will be judged by God without partiality based on what one does. Rom 2:5-11

           2.  When one does what The Law says to do they are NOT justified because THE LAW just makes sin apparent           Rom 3:20 (Rom 2:12 looks like a contradiction)

·        Difference is that the Jews didn't have faith in Jesus and what God did. Rom 3:26

·        They thought they were special just because they were God's people, doing the Law of Moses was all they had to do

·        They were puffed up about it.

·        They were going thru the motions

·        Luke 17:10 Done what was commanded to do just unprofitable servants

·        Jews were boastful about the Law of Moses didn't make them better

3.  Righteousness of God in thru Faith in Christ to All who believe. Rom 3:22

4.  Justified by God's Grace - Redemption in Christ Rom 3:24 (emphasis on what God has done   for us)

III.  SALVATION BY FAITH

       A.  Example of Abraham

            1.  Abraham is father to those who walk in the steps of Faith - Rom 4:12

            2.  Trusted in God  - Rom 4:20-22

      B.  Trusting & Realizing What God has done for us. Rom 5 & 8

            1.  God gives plenty of Reason to trust Him - God died for us. Rom 5:8

            2.  God assures us of God's Grace is greater than Sin. Rom 5:9-21

            3.  Law of Christ can set us free from Sin. Rom 8:2

            4.  Saved by the Hope of being with God forever. Rom 8:24 that He will keep his promise

      C.  Putting Our Faith into Action Rom 6 - Repentance

            1.  Dying to self Rom 6:6

            2.  Putting on Christ to live according to God's will. Rom 6:19

      D.  Our Struggle to Serve God. Rom 7

            1.  God recognizes our struggle with Sin.  Rom 7:15, 22-23

2.      No Condemnation to those in Christ. Rom 8:1

E.     The love of God

1.      Nothing can separate us from the love of God.  Rom 8:28-39 (except ourselves)

IV.  STATUS OF THE JEWS  Rom 9-11

      A.  Who Are the True Children of Promise?  Rom 9:6-9

            1.  Not those who are of the flesh. Rom 9:8

            2.  Children of Promise

            3.  Those who seek it by Faith. Rom 9:32

      B.  Jews Reject Salvation.  Rom 10 (not under the law of Moses)

            1.  Rejected god Because they were ignorant of God's Righteousness.  Rom 10:3

            2.  They didn't confess Jesus.  Rom 10:9-10

            3.  They didn't obey the gospel.  Rom 10:16

      C.  God has never CastAway the Faithful.  Rom 11

            1.  God didn't Cast away the Jews.  Rom 11:1

            2.  Jews were rejected because of unbelief.  Rom 11:20

            3.  God will save those who don't continue in unbelief 

                        Rom 11:22-23, 26 (if Jews repent & trust in God will be saved IF continue to be faithful)

 

V.  PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF OUR FAITH  Rom 12-15

      A.  Our Obligation to Christians.  12

            1.  Proper Attitude   Rom 12:1-3

            2.  Realize not everyone has same function.  12:4

            3.  Commanded to love one another regardless how feel about them.  12:9-10

            4.  Take care of the needs of Christians 12:13

      B.  Our Obligation to the Government (the Roman Gov.) & Neighbors 13

            1.  Must obey the Gov.  13:1-2

            2.  Commanded to love non-Christians.  13:9-10

      C.  When Christians Differ on Non-Essentials. 14-15:7 – (Clash of Cultures)

            1.  Receive Brethren when disagree about non-sinful things

            2.  Don't abuse your liberty   Rom 14:13

            3.  Don't do anything you might consider to be sinful.  Rom 14:23

            4.  Be like-minded.  Rom 15:5-6

 

VI. PAUL'S PLACE IN OBEDIENCE TO THE FAITH  Rom 15:14-16

      A.  Fully preach the gospel of Christ.  15;19

            1.  Preach to the Gentiles.  15:6, 20

            2.  Paul's request work together in prayer to God for Paul.  Rom 15:30

      B.  Made known to All Nations

            WHY?  Obedience to the faith.  Rom 16:26

      C.  Letter written so Christians would conform themselves to Christ

 

CONCLUSION:  HAVE YOU BEEN OBEDIENT TO THE FAITH?

                         TRUSTING IN GOD TO DO WHAT HE SAYS?  

 

                        If not a Christian, Roman's not written w specific purpose of having one become a Christian But talks about all the steps needed to become one:

                                                 BELIEVE—Like Abraham Rom 4

                                                 CONFESS—Rom 10:9-10

                                                 REPENT—Rom 6

                                                 BAPTISM—Rom 6:3-4
