driving_in_the_night

So there I was, driving down the CTE somewhere past the Outram exit heading towards in the direction of Ang Mo Kio on my way home. No, I do not happen to stay at AMK but there is this little thing called a road that links up to the PIE and that heads me back home.

Now I was speeding. Anything above 90km/h is speeding. I was going at 92km/h, not that anyone is going to believe me anyway.

Appear the antagonist. This guy, driving a really run down vehicle, actually matched my speed and cut into my lane. Now I was really pissed. Driving at the speed I was going at, that guy was going to have to need a new bumper. But wait, if I bump into him, then by some really vague wording of the order of the land, the onus would be on me to prove that he had given me less than 2 lousy seconds to react.

I was in a really good mood prior to Mr. Nice Guy's appearance. A really good track was on the radio - 'Never Saw Blue Like that by Shawn Colvin', if i remember correctly. Well, I started seeing red like some other times before right about then.

So I did the next most natural thing - I switched lanes to the left and overtook him and then switched back into his lane. That should have convinced him of the superiority of my driving skills as well as the fact that my engine was better. If Mr. Nice Guy would have left well alone then - I would have gotten back to being contented again.

Guess what? He didn't.

He had to freaking do the exact same thing to me. Very original I must say. So now i was on the 2nd lane and he on the right and we were both speeding (which i remind you, my dear reader, is anything above 90km/h), to try to be that little bit faster than the other, just so that we can cut into the other's lane.

Dumb, you say? Well, it was that time of the night. And there was this other minor matter of him provoking me in the middle of a good song.

So we were going neck to neck for some time, other times weaving in and out of traffic to make sure the other gets let behind. We carried this onto the PIE. Now if some authoritarian figure were around, either one of us would be in a lot of trouble - probably the slower one i suppose. Another incentive to not be the one lagging behind.

Finally I caught sight of my exit and the three lanes leading to it were clear. I also saw the red and blue lights of a beacon just on the flyover after my exit. So I did the most natural thing. I did want to get home after all. I slowed down, switched lanes and exited the PIE. But not before I saw him being stopped by the men in blue.

What sweet delight.
