Size: 20-25cm long including tail
Lifespan: 2-5 years
Natural range: throughout western North America
Housing
- large wire rat type cage preferably with levels
- base of cage should be at least 50cm by 50 cm and 1 meter high
- tend to be solitary and should be housed individually
- Bedding: aspen or corn cob
- Accessories: nest box, solid rat wheel, branches, wood chews, tubes
Food
- mixture of a commercial large parrot seed mix which includes nuts and dried fruits, rodent blocks and kitten kibble
- fresh fruit or veggies once to twice weekly
- occassional mealworm or cricket
- provide a cuttlebone for extra calcium and minerals
Breeding
- Maturity: 9 months old
- Gestation: 30 days
- Litter size: 5-6
- pregnant females should be separated from the male
- eyes open at about 20 days old
- should be fully weaned by 6 weeks old
- start handling pups from about 2 weeks of age to prevent aggressive behaviour
